Breaking News from CFRB 1010AM News Radio - Toronto
Airliner on fire on the ground at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ). Unclear as to cause. Announcers asking for updates from motorists in the region on HWY 401. Report says great deal of smoke. I have to go into a meeting shortly but I'll listen for updates as long as I can.

Right... With the way the radar looked at the time, I wouldn't be surprised if this is what happened. The reports are that Toronto has warning systems for this though, but it could have happened at a time when they couldn't do anything.

I wonder if Toronto was its final scheduled destiination, or if it was continuing on here? Toronto is one of our immigration preclearance airports...

So Fox started out with this being a Lufthansa 737 that crashed on takeoff, right? I wouldn't take anything from them seriously.
Their ability to botch breaking stories is beyond belief; not that the others don't have similar botches but they seem to go the extra mile with a bit more completely wrong info than CNN and MSNBC.

I work five minutes from there at Eglinton/Renforth - insane amount of rain, hail and thunder this afternoon. You can see the smoke from the building. Nothing is moving on the highway - apparently a lot of cars stopped on the 401 - looks like the plane is in the ditch.

Overhead of YYZ; the area on the television images and of the crash is near the bottom center of this photo. The highway is Ontario 401, one of the busiest highways in North America (rivaling I-95 in the east, I-94 in the Midwest and I-5 in the west in traffic volume).

But wouldn't a downburst have forced it into the ground before landing? Yet witness reports (if accurate) are that the plane skidded off the end of the runway. Though perhaps there could have been a downburst, the pilot reacted, and thus the plane was delayed in its landing to too far down the runway.

Huge fire according to radio news on the hour, and many survivors being picked up by passing traffic.

More explosions going off now. This thing is cooking.

I don't know about the pilot or co pilot, but MSNBC just reported that "there are reports of survivors climbing out". Let's hope so..although I don't see much activity with vehicles leaving the scene :(
