Laws legal bid 'publicity stunt'('Gays on rampage' Alert!!!)

A LEGAL bid to make John Laws apologise for calling TV personality Carson Kressley a "pillow biter" was nothing more than a publicity stunt, the broadcaster's lawyer said today.

Gay rights activist Gary Burns has filed a complaint with the New South Wales Administrative Decision Tribunal (ADT) about comments broadcast by the talk-show host on November 3 last year.

Mr Laws described Kressley, the star of Queer Eye For The Straight Guy, as a "pillow biter" and a "pompous little pansy prig".

Mr Burns said Mr Laws' comments promoted homosexual men as dirty and perverted and that he should be forced to apologise.

Lawyer Guy Reynolds, appearing for the 2UE broadcaster, today filed a strike-out application with the ADT for it to reject Mr Burns' application.

He said the claim was vexatious because Mr Burns was making it for no other purpose than to seek publicity.

"The basis of the Laws case is that these proceedings have been brought by Mr Burns for the purpose of gaining publicity for himself and we submit that that is an unnatural and improper purpose ... and therefore vexatious," Mr Reynolds told the tribunal.

The ADT ruled last year that radio station 2UE had breached the Anti-Discrimination Act in 2003 when Mr Laws and fellow presenter Steve Price referred to The Block's gay renovators Gav and Waz as "poofs".

That complaint was also brought by Mr Burns, and Mr Reynolds said he was seeking more media attention.

"We are seeking to prove a continuum that from the initial broadcast in 2003 until today ... Mr Burns conceived that the bringing of proceedings against Mr Laws was an opportunity to draw publicity for himself."

Outside the tribunal, Mr Burns said he wanted to spread the message that homophobia was wrong, not to self-publicise.

"My enthusiasm for a fair go for homosexual males is unwavered," Mr Burns said.

"I'm not seeking publicity for myself, I'm doing it because unless we send a message out there in society that vilifying gay men is unacceptable, homosexual males will always be perceived as being perverted and sick and dirty."

"Gay men are getting bashed on the street, they're getting vilified at work ... and I'm saying enough is enough."

The case continues before acting judge Michael Chesterman, Lynn Houlahan and Cleonie Quayle.

That's nothing. What would shock is if John added "and, oh yeah, his pillow bites back."

No way around it. The truth hurts!

Care enough about people, to be honest with them.
