A "SUPERMILK" containing Omega 3 fatty acids derived from oily fish is to go on sale this week.
It is produced by cows which are given a special fish oil blend along with their normal feed. A 250ml serving contains ten times more of the Omega 3 acids known as DHA and EPA than regular milk but is said to taste the same.
Omega 3 fatty acids tackle heart disease and ensure healthy nails, hair and skin.
Claire Williamson, a nutrition scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation, said many people in the UK do not eat the recommended one portion per week of oily fish.
"Consuming oily fish is linked to a decreased risk of heart disease," she said.
"A healthy, balanced diet is the best approach and I would encourage people to eat oily fish, but if people don't like it we have to look at alternatives."
According to the Food Standards Agency, Omega 3 fatty acids are found in certain vegetable oils, but these may not have the same benefits as those in fish. The Fresh Omega 3 milk will go on sale at Marks & Spencer this week.
It sounds like a good idea to me, except that a lot of American adults consume little amounts of milk. Put it in beer, wine, and fast food too, and we'll have the country blanketed.
Make it yourself. Go to the store and buy a bottle of Flax oil. It contains the Omega-3 your looking for. I squirt it on my salad everynight.
I think it would taste great with cereal. Trying to get the kids to drink is another thing... "Come on kids, time for breakfast, here's your Lucky Charms and Fishy Milk..." yum yum.
Flax oil is a good idea. I believe Purslane is rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids as well and it grows like a weed.
"said to taste the same."
No! My experience would lead me to believe the taste is affected. I've actually consumed fish oil (gel capsules) with milk in the past. If you belch within 3 hours of consumption and a little bit comes back up, it doesn't taste like milk, trust me! :)
He/she hasnt, but I have. It isnt half bad. First, the oatmeal they use isnt the instant rolled oats we have here. It isn't "mushy." Its more like brown rice (at least in the recipe I had).
The rest is just innards. Greeks (like my wife) eat innards, I-tals eat innards, Koreans eat innards, Messy-kins eat innards everybody eats innards except Americans (and they do but dont know it).
It's more like a rice casserole or something. Not terrible. Only gross if you want to use minute oatmeal or something. That was my experience.
Oh - and there was quite a bit of drinking involved beforehand (but that would be the same with the Greeks, etc)... FYI.
I'm with you about it probably not tasting the same. They said the same about squirting that lactose stuff in milk, uck!
My first thought was cod liver oil added to milk.....bleeeech. I have an English auntie, so I can tell you all about cod liver oil. That stuff is foul.
I bought it at Sams. Pricy, but VERY worth it. No fish burps ever :)

I also put Flax oil in my Protein smoothies, I don't know if the plant would make those too inviting.
I don't know the name but my mom only buys organic free range eggs. The chickens are given a vegetarian feed fortified with oils.

"Oh..dear. That taste is just awful. God bless you! :)"
Ha, ha! Thanks. You get used to it after awhile! :)
I am afraid I can't remember, I just remember seeing the packaging that boldly trumpeted "Omega 3". They are a good bit more expensive than regular eggs.
As an aside, my local supermarket has a little sign reminding us that, "eggs are a low carb food". Do they raise the chickens on the Atkins diet or something? :)
We were in some restaurant in Petaluma or somewhere... Polish or Hungarian joint... you order an entire dinner and it comes with all the extras.
We ordered something and my wife liked the soup that came with the meal - some sort of cream soup. The waiter asked her "you like tongue?"
She replies, "I haven't had it since I was a kid."
He points to the soup bowl and says "that's tongue soup."
Ha. Forgetting your "roots." But he was correct - it was *delicious.*
Well, delicious and *expensive* in that case... Ha.
