White House drops 'war on terror' slogan

WASHINGTON, July 26 (UPI) -- The Bush administration has begun downplaying the "war on terror" in favor of "a global struggle against violent extremism," the New York Times reports.

Gen. Richard B. Myers, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told the National Press Club that if something is a war "then you think of people in uniform as being the solution."

Myers said that while the military may be in the forefront now the long-term solution is more diplomatic, economic and political.

Is John Kerry writing this crap?

No, but Gen. Richard B. Myers is, and I wonder if he cleared this PC crap through his CIC?

struggle against violent extremism

Hmmm.. I like it - sounds like half the Democratic party is targeted with this one.

"I smell RINO dung all over this."

Real distinctive odor isn't it. Kind of a formulation that is part "new tone in Washington" and "compassionate conservatism".

Guess those 3000 deaths on 9/11 aren't all that important after all...

the problem with bringing this out NOW, is that the FIGHT is currently NOT over yet.

But if the fight's over then there's no need to change the name. I understand wanting to broaden the focus, but this just looks to me like an admission of wrongdoing. Bush and friends have been arguing a multi-faceted approach since day one. The media and the democrats are the ones misleading and lying about it, and I really don't see how a name change accomplishes anything.

The story doesn't support the headline.

Look at the quotes. All they are are legitimate comments made in the course of discussion.

Why are people falling for this silly MSM spin? This is basically an opinion piece.

Here are ALL of the quotes in the article:

Gen. Richard B. Myers: "then you think of people in uniform as being the solution." Myers said that while the military may be in the forefront now the long-term solution is more diplomatic, economic and political.

Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld:the country "wages the global struggle against the enemies of freedom, the enemies of civilization."

OK...and the problem with these quotes is what, exactly?

Get a grip. Since when is the New York Times a definitive source on the true feelings of the Bush Administration?

The rest of the short piece:

"Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld used the new terminology at a retirement ceremony Friday for the naval chief of operations. Rumsfeld said the country "wages the global struggle against the enemies of freedom, the enemies of civilization.

Officials told the Times that the new language is a product of meetings of President Bush's top national security advisers."

Does this mean that we're no longer going to have a "war on drugs" or a "war on poverty"?

That's right. It's now going to be called the 'struggle against extremism'. Sounds pretty tame. (Presumably this is so Muslim crackpots won't get upset.)

I read it, but as I said, that's an opinion piece. "Using the new terminology" is meaningless--since 9-11, Rumsfeld hasn't said "The War on Terror" each time he refers to the WOT. He's said "The Iraq conflict" and "The War" and "the ongoing" whatever.

This is merely another label for the same thing. I have yet to hear the White House drop the term WOT consistently, or use any of these so-called replacements consistently. Two occassions isn't some radical new direction.
