A planted story gone bad

Yesterday we noted, based on a column by Jonathan Turley, that Senator Durbin appeared to be flirting with the idea of holding John Roberts' deeply held Catholic beliefs against him. Turley reported that, when Roberts met the Senator, Durbin had interrogated Roberts about how he would handle a hypothetical conflict between Catholic principles and the law. The hypothetical is more than a little far-fetched because, to my knowledge, Catholicism doesn't make it a sin to declare bad laws constitutional.

Today, according to the Washington Times, Durbin and his staff are denying that the religious interrorgation took place and that the Senator or anyone on his staff told Turley otherwise. But Turley insists that the information came straight from Durbin, when the two met in the green room at one the Sunday gab shows.

Who is telling the truth, Turley or Durbin? Hugh Hewitt puts his money on the law professor, not the politician, and who can blame him? Says Hugh:

I don't think Professor Turley would make up such a potentially important statement. I think Dick "you'd think I was describing Nazis" Durbin is a double-talking hack who wanted to plant a story but didn't think Turley would quote him. It is pretty clear that Durbin lied to Turley, and that is a warning to the nominee to always have a witness with him when he talks to Democrats.

holding John Roberts' deeply held Catholic beliefs against him

Is this what we've come to??

Our country was founded with religious beliefs and now, suddenly, being a Catholic is taboo?

We seriously need to take our country back.

I think they sandbagged Turley. Turley claims two of those in attendance besides Roberts and Durban were the source of the story.

Even in the op ed piece Turley said that he could not understand why Roberts would have said he would recluse himself on issues that went against his moral teachings.

They wanted to hurt Roberts with conservatives.

After Turley wrote the op-ed I got a feeling someone from Roberts camp went to Durban and gave him a chance to clear up the matter.

ALL religion brother

I don't know, being Islamic gives you a lot of voice in this country all of a sudden.  Have you noticed that this anti-catholic/jewish movement has escalated ten-fold since 9-11?

Durban has a record of twisting the truth anyway. We shouldn't trust Durban or his Democrat Party Demogogues.

Is this what we've come to??

We seriously need to take our country back.

And our Church too. Durbin's 'Catholic', just like Kerry and Kennedy.

http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2005/7/21/112234.shtml

John Roberts is a Roman Catholic and as such can expect to be grilled by Durbin and his colleagues on whether he would let his religious beliefs color his opinions on abortion. When Judge William H. Pryor was first nominated to the Court of Appeals, Durbin, who describes himself as a "practicing Catholic," said that "many Catholics who oppose abortion personally do not believe the laws of the land should prohibit abortion for all others in extreme cases involving rape, incest, and the life and health of the mother."

That statement led Denver's Archbishop Chaput to scold Durbin for distorting most Catholic's beliefs.

Golly! Durbin or Chaput? Who can I trust? Not much of a contest, is it?

Only if you are a Republican.

John Kerry was never questioned about it, was he?
