Well, it happened friday (July 22nd)when my life came to a sudden stop with me walking on stage at the Atlanta Civic Center with the President of the United States. Just writing this it seems to have been a very sureal moment...I'm having difficulty remembering it all.
For some reason I was selected from the state of Georgia to represent seniors and discuss SS reform. It started two weeks ago with repeated phone calls from the WH asking me questions. Funny thing..the first call came in and when I saw it was "unknown caller" I just let the machine pick up. Imagine my shock when they said it was the WH liason office calling for me. Needless to say I thought it was a joke.
Being a 70 yr old senior way past her days of being on stage (in plays)I found it totally exciting...scary...total intimidating and all the other things one can think of.
But I can tell you that President Bush and his Mother were most gracious and I came away with even more appreciation of the tremendous job he has before him every day. His kindness toward a family who had lost a son in Iraq..his writing a special note for a friend of mine whose Mom is very ill are just two examples of what I found to be his most enduring qualities. We can spend hours debating policies butI believe he truly cares about people. I mentioned what our subdivision does for returning service men and he thanked me for taking the time to think of our military.
We will be going around the state talking to other seniors to enlist their help in getting start on SS reform. Will need some help with why people are so adamant against any changes.
I'm still walking on clouds and since this is my first post if I goofed please be kind and show me the way!
Loved this story. Lucky you! Congrats!
meant..."granny"...sorry
Congratulations and thanks for sharing this once in a lifetime moment.
Hey, guy how are you doing?
I hope better!
Regards
Dave
How very wonderful for you! I am sure you did a good job, and I know you will be contributing to the effort to reform Social Security. Thank you so much!
WOW! Good for you! And, thank you for sharing this special event. I, too, think our good President is very genuine in his concern for people and his love for our great country. That's why I trust, respect and love him!
Hey GrannyHeart!! Doin' Georgia proud! I think I know where some pics are, let me finish getting kids in bed and I'll be back.
Glad to see you posting. Didn't follow the thread closely, but read of your crash. Hope you're mending well.
oops, make that sincerity!!
Great job, with the President and with your first post! And welcome to FR.
bttt
Great post! Congratulations on meeting President Bush! (color me jealous!) Thanks for sharing your experience. Hope you or somebody else can post pictures.
I LOVE our great president and enjoy hearing first-hand accounts of those who deal with him directly. Thank you again for sharing, and for your work in promoting SS reform. While you're at it, add the Fair Tax Act (HR25/S25) to your list; its prime sponsor is Rep. John Linder of Georgia, and it's REAL federal tax reform.
Bless your heart! I know if I ever had the same opportunity I would be floating forever. Thanks for sharing your special moments with us.
You get Better Now ! :*)
find later bump
Funny you should mention the Fair Tax. On Saturday we went to a fundraiser for a candidate for House district 106 and Congressman John Linder was there.
He came up and gave me a hug and then stated for all to hear.."I kept waiting for you to bring up the Fair Tax while on stage with the President"....when I told him that I had considered it but thought better when I knew the only reason I was there was SS reform and didn't want to rock the boat...Linder thought I could have brought the house down with the Fair Tax comment. Heck, I can think of a couple of other issues I could have talked about...FR gives one plenty to think about!!
Ahhh, another great story you have. Glad to hear you're well aware of what a fine legislator Georgia has in John Linder. I've never met him, but I think the FTA is the best crafted piece of legislation I've ever seen. As you know, we've made great progress, and our prospects have never been better. Again, in large part due to our outstanding president, W.
