Written apologies will be sent to a fallen Marine's relatives angered by Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll's uninvited appearance at the soldier's funeral and her criticism of the war in Iraq, Gov. Ed Rendell said Sunday.
Rendell said he will send a personal letter to the family of the late Marine Staff Sgt. Joseph Goodrich, of Westwood, and will ask Knoll to do the same. Goodrich, 32, a police officer and infantry unit leader, died July 10 in a mortar attack in Hit, Iraq.
Rendell said he hadn't spoken with Knoll about the incident, but was disturbed by the family's charge that she made a political statement against the war.
"It's not the business of state government to support the war, but our state supports the men and women who are fighting this war," Rendell said during an appearance in Mt. Washington.

Really, Rendell? As far as THIS Soldier is concerned you cannot support me without also supporting the War on Terror, including our mission in Iraq. What a moron.

Kind of an odd statement?

Although Bush won in the rest of the state, Kerry carried Philadelphia by a margin of 5 to 1. They counted the votes in the state and figured how many more they needed to turn Pennsylvania 'blue'.

Actually PA has a really bad system the Gov and Lt Gov run separately in the primaries, but as a team in the general so the Governor has no say who his/her running mate is, but is stuck with him/her anyway.

I haven't seen a word about this on the Philly local news broadcasts. Yet if Rick Santorum farts, it's "Breaking News"!

Every true American would sacrifice anything asked of us in order to support our military in their time of need. To suggest we would not is just pure BS.
My point in posting what I posted is that the Bush admin is NOT asking anyone but the military to sacrifice anything.
I KNOW most Americans would do anything asked of them to help out, but no gov't official is asking. (Freepmail me and I will give you some examples of what I am talking about)
There are plenty of Americans volunteering their time and money in contributing to the troops needs with care packages, air conditioners, etc, and that is great.
What I don't see from Bush is a concerted home front effort. What we keep hearing is indicative of the entire war. "Carry on with your daily routine, just be more alert" is what I hear every time the Homeland Security color code is discussed. There should be a LOT more to it than that!
Am I disparaging my own actions? H&ll no, I put in 13 months in Iraq, been deployed twice since 2001 for a total of 26 months, have been in the Reserves for 19 years. I truly believe what my tagline says. I just wish the Admin would actually SAY it to the people, then act like it.

I think you are aiming this in the wrong direction. Bush has come out and asked the people to be ever vigilante. He has asked us to back him in homeland security, even though to do so we will have to ignore the fact it could be bending the rules a bit. He has had to defend the Patriot act every time he turns around. the Patriot act in itself is a call for Americans to give up a little of what we hold most dearest, our civil liberties. If you listen to the Dems and the left wing media this is the worst thing an American can do. We do not give up our freedoms lightly, yet most Americans realize we need to give law enforcement the tools they need in order to track those in this country who would do us harm. This is giving a great deal to the war effort.
Could the administration ask more of us? I suppose they can, but they are at war with the lunacy of the left and their partners in crime the MSM. It is all they can do to put the fires out the anti-war lefties and the media throw at them daily. I can't say as I blame them for being gun shy about trying to get the public involved, as everything they do is scrutinized to the point of accusing them of something illegal.
Every single time the liberal left gets a chance they try and take America down. Given the current situation with the media, I doubt there is anything the administration can do. What we need is our congress critters to grow a little hair and come out against the propaganda of the left. If we don't get accurate reporting how can anyone ask the American people to sacrifice anything?
For pete's sake when was the last time you saw a positive story on the war on terror? You expect an official to come out and ask the American people to sacrifice something for what to them appears is a lost cause? That just makes no sense at all!
You have been there. How many reports while you were there and since you have come home have you seen praising what we have accomplished? I'll lay odds it is a big fat ZERO!

"It's not the business of state government to support the war...Rendell said" Oh really...?
"More than 2,000 Pennsylvania soldiers received a farewell from Gov. Ed Rendell on Thursday before they head to Iraq, the largest combat deployment of the Pennsylvania National Guard since World War II....."All 4,000-plus of you are liberators," Rendell said. "Liberators in the sense that what we're doing in Iraq is to try to bring democracy to people who have been enslaved."

Personally, I wouldn't want any government official(s) in my home after that funeral fiasco And that's a good point, particularly when it comes to Rendell and his ilk. A porch apology would be acceptable, unless the words "if she offended anyone" were involved.

You're right, she can't be fired, more's a pity. Declared incompetent should be possible but not in today's political atmosphere.

I don't go to movies, but I saw a trailer on TV once that promoted a movie called, if my memory is correct, "Mrs. Doubtfire." The woman in the movie looks a lot like the Pennsylvania lieutenant governor. Is there a connection there? Did the lieutenant governor appear in a movie by that name? By the way, I last went to a movie some 30 years ago. My entertainment these days is limited to C-Span, the Discovery Channel, A&E, the Family Channel and Fox.

Yes. She ran on Rendell's ticket, and presumably would be running for reelection with him, at least before her disgusting behavior at the funeral.

Lt. Gov. Catherine Baker Knoll's appearance at the Marine's funeral is disgusting and I hope she has commited political suicide. But something else in this story bothers this old sailor and brother of a Marine. Newspapers and the broadcast media often refer to Marines as "soldiers". Most marines I know will tell you that all Marines are rifleman and Marines ain't soldiers, they are MARINES.
