MANILA (AP) - About 500 Muslim rebels have withdrawn from two Mindanao strongholds to let government forces launch an offensive against another Muslim group -- the al-Qaida-linked Abu Sayyaf, a rebel spokesman said Sunday.
The Moro Islamic Liberation Front guerrillas, nearly 300 of whom were armed, withdrew from Talayan and Guindolongan Thursday to allow the jungle offensive to go ahead and avoid accidental clashes with government troops, rebel spokesman Eid Kabalu said.
The guerrillas plan to return to their camps Monday unless the military asks for an extension, Kabalu said.

Umm, what the hell exactly is the point of this "jungle offensive" if the enemy is forewarned negotiated with to clear out of the way? Am I missing something here?

Troubles with the Muslim brotherhood? Always. When they aren't killing "infidels", and sometimes when they are, they kill each other.

Umm, what the hell exactly is the point of this "jungle offensive" if the enemy is forewarned negotiated with to clear out of the way? Am I missing something here? What you are missing is that there are two rival Muslim "gangs" in the Philippines. The Moro Liberation front is less radical Muslim and more communist, while Abu-Sayyef is more fundamentalist Jihadie. The Army is just choosing to deal with what they perceive as the greater threat first. Which is also probably what the Moros are thinking. "Let the army kill them, then when the army leaves, we'll take over". The Moros are kinda sort descended from the ones who the .45 ACP cartridge and 1911 pistol were designed to kill, or to be more accurate the ones who those items were spec'ed to kill.

I didn't know the Moros were still a problem in the Philippines. Since I only hear about Abu Sayyaf, I had assumed the Moros were defunct.

Havn't kept up on the events in the PI. I have been there many, many times and love it and the people. They are a very good and hard working lot. They deserve a lot more than they have. I once thought of retiring there and having a family. Man plans and God laughs!
They have there own ways of doing things. Some may think them a bit backwards but I love them as a people and have a great respect for them.
