Man shot was not linked to London terror attacks 23/07/2005 - 17:45:46
The man shot dead by police in south London yesterday is not connected to attempted terror attacks on the capital, Scotland Yard said today.
For somebody to lose their life in such circumstances is a tragedy and one that the Metropolitan Police Service regrets, said a spokesman.
The fatal shooting happened in Stockwell at 10am yesterday when armed plain clothes police officers shot a man as he tried to board a train at the underground station.
He had emerged from a nearby house that was under surveillance because of a suspected link to Thursdays attempted bomb attacks on three Tube trains and a bus.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, was then followed by surveillance officers.
He is thought to have caught a bus to Stockwell Tube station where he was challenged by officers, who told him to stop.
The man, who is believed to be of South American appearance, then bolted down an escalator, according to witnesses.
He apparently tried to get on a train before he was, according to witnesses, shot five times in the head by an officer with an automatic pistol.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair had said yesterday that the shooting was directly linked to anti-terror operations.
However, in a statement, Scotland Yard said today: We believe we now know the identity of the man shot at Stockwell Underground station by police on Friday, July 22, although he is still subject to formal identification.
We are now satisfied that he was not connected with the incidents of Thursday, July 21, 2005.

Why'd he run if innocent? (by an ex-cop)
Let the Monday morning quarterbacking begin.
Agressive measures to combat terrorist's are sometimes going to have unfortunate consequences. He shouldn't have run however. Natural Selection rears it's ugly head again.
Their island nation is flooded with these bloodthirsty mental cases looking for virgins in some phony afterlife with some phony, mythical prophet!!!
As I said before. Natural Selection showed it's face again.
The second shot.
Yes, this incident did remind me of a scene from the movie Brazil
Levity aside, considering the circumstances this poor fellow deserves a Darwin award.
I guess they found the limits of " My Bad".
That danged Rush kinda helped a little it sounds like... Whew!!!
I think they fear a dirty bomb is about to be set off in a city in England.
Thus, another "Darwin Award!" To bad, so sad... your dead!!! (used to be... "your dad.")
Jean Charles de Menezes, 27. Scotland Yard said Mr Menezes, who lived in Brixton, south London, was completely unconnected to the bomb attacks. Mr Menezes, who was from the city of Gonzaga in Minas Gerais state, had lived in London legally for at least three years and was employed as an electrician.
What was he doing there? What was his connection to the people in the house,
"House" in England may not refer to a single family dwelling, but also to an apartment building or an office building. It's not as if his leaving the building under surveillance implies that he knew someone in the building connected to the bombings.
and, did he realize the men chasing him were undercover police.
Either he didn't or he didn't believe them. I've heard conflicting news regarding how much English he spoke.
He was from Brazil. In Brazil, there is sometimes no difference.
But did he run? The police have changed their story enough to make the whole original version suspect. As originally reported it looked like a good shoot, but now I don't know. Police have been known to freak out, too.
These were men who thought this fella was about to kill innocents on another subway train....they did the right thing...and will do it again if the need arises.
