Man shot was not linked to London terror attacks 23/07/2005 - 17:45:46
The man shot dead by police in south London yesterday is not connected to attempted terror attacks on the capital, Scotland Yard said today.
For somebody to lose their life in such circumstances is a tragedy and one that the Metropolitan Police Service regrets, said a spokesman.
The fatal shooting happened in Stockwell at 10am yesterday when armed plain clothes police officers shot a man as he tried to board a train at the underground station.
He had emerged from a nearby house that was under surveillance because of a suspected link to Thursdays attempted bomb attacks on three Tube trains and a bus.
The man, whose name has not yet been released, was then followed by surveillance officers.
He is thought to have caught a bus to Stockwell Tube station where he was challenged by officers, who told him to stop.
The man, who is believed to be of South American appearance, then bolted down an escalator, according to witnesses.
He apparently tried to get on a train before he was, according to witnesses, shot five times in the head by an officer with an automatic pistol.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Ian Blair had said yesterday that the shooting was directly linked to anti-terror operations.
However, in a statement, Scotland Yard said today: We believe we now know the identity of the man shot at Stockwell Underground station by police on Friday, July 22, although he is still subject to formal identification.
We are now satisfied that he was not connected with the incidents of Thursday, July 21, 2005.

If the bobbies went back to billyclubs everyone, would be a lot safer. Someone is bound to say it.
Ooops!
This was a fierce response. I don't know what was going on behind the scenes, but there must have been something quite significant for these officers to operate in this manner.
Did they think he was the trigger man for a WMD? Were they attempting by any means possible to keep him from activating a WMD?
In upcoming days we may get answers to this. I certainly do not think we have the whole story at this time. We may never have it.
Yeah but he was thinking about being one...
Oh hogwash! Just like anywhere in the world... All he had to do to stay alive was obey the commands he was given. Leaping the turnstile and running from police is suicidal behavior!!!
Five to the head. Not taking many chances, were they?
It had to be fierce. He was a possible detonator and needed to lose consciousness ASAP.
I'm reading more into this that the fellow acted like he was up to something and was in a house that was suspect. I think that the least he should have done was to stop as ordered.
Let's don't start beatin up the Bobbies, like the radicals of the 60's and 70's smeared "the pigs" in this country. I just can't bear to hear anymore of that!!!
What part of 'stop or I'll shoot' did he not understand?
Ooops. Your sarcasm detector turned off?
I'm with you. I want to know who this was and what he was up to. I really am not interested in what he was not, though it's interesting that none of his family have been complaining.
It would be interesting to know if he was Muslim.
Well, that's a pity.
But if you are suspected of violence, won't stop when commanded, flee from the police, and make a threatening move towards more victims... you WILL be shot, in any city and at any time.
I prefer the past tense: We are now satisfied that he is no longer connected to anything. Too bad the dummy didn't comprehend the order "stop or I'll shoot"! And only a day short of the weekend, what a bi#@h!
This is no different than the gang-banger wanna-bes that get shot and it turns out they didn't have any dope, guns, or gang affiliations. Don't act the part and you won't get whacked.
