I saw suspect shot dead
By NICK PARKER,MIKE SULLIVAN, STEVE KENNEDY, CHARLES RAE and VIRGINIA WHEELER
A SHAKEN commuter told last night how he watched armed undercover cops shoot dead a suicide bomb suspect by pumping five bullets into him.
Mark Whitby, 47, was sitting reading his paper when the Asian man leapt into his Tube carriage at Stockwell station with the plain-clothes cops in pursuit.
As the man stumbled the cops closed in and fearing he was about to detonate a bomb immediately opened fire.
Mark said: As the man leapt on the train I looked at his face. He looked just like a cornered rat ... like a cornered fox, absolutely petrified.
Then he tripped. One of the police officers was holding a black automatic pistol in his left hand. They held it down to him and unloaded five shots into him bang, bang, bang, bang, bang.
Five shots and hes dead. It was no further than five yards from me. It was like a nightmare a very distressing sight.
Last night police sources told how undercover officers had followed the suspect to the station from an address in neighbouring Brixton, South London.
The house had been under surveillance overnight after its address was found on documents in one of the rucksacks used in Thursdays failed bomb attempts.
At 9am yesterday a young Asian man walked out of the house wearing a heavily-padded jacket.
He was tailed from a distance and followed on to a bus.
The officers in pursuit were wearing concealed earpieces connecting them to Anti-Terrorist chiefs at New Scotland Yard.
When it became clear the man intended to get off the bus near the station the officers urgently requested armed assistance fearing he had a bomb beneath his padded jacket and planned to detonate it on a train.
They should go clean out the mosques next....talk about s***-holes of terrorist support!!!
Yes, good job, even though some on FR are claiming the police were "out of control." Nothing seemed at all out of control about this--they acted correctly, given what they already knew.
I wonder why they allowed that guy to get on a bus? Why didn't they take him down as soon as he left the house with an overcoat on in the middle of summer?
Well kids, it turned out this time he didn't have a bomb, but next time...there won't be a next time! :^O
I can see how this would be distressing. The guy was running from the cops to the train though. It would have been even more distressing for him if the guy had had a bomb and blew up the car while PC cops were dicussing what to do.
I don't think the cops were out of control at all. Extraordinary events require extraordinary measures, and the first Western suicide bombings are certainly extraoridinary events.
Someone needs to remind Amy Kellog on Fox of that little fact. Several times an hour, she whines about how "distressing" it must have been for everyone when this piece of dirt got shot. I wish Fox would put her on the celebrity beat, where she might be less "distressed."
I'm strongly in favor of harsh action against the terrorists, but I agree that this story is more comforting to people who take trains than it is to people who take buses. The good news is that this guy won't be a threat to any more buses or trains.
Bill
A young asian man eh'? That's a pleasantly vague description. I'd bet more precisely, a young Pakistani Muslim.
Absolutely. The correct treatment for a rabid animal.
This also could have been a set up. I assume these cops are really good so at sometime they had to let this guy know they were following him. Was he told to stop? Was that why he was running?
So true. A bombing would have really upset the commuters.
I'm not watching. Too distressing:')
They did exactly the right thing. The man was already under suspicion, with connections to the bombers. He had on a padded jacket in hot summer weather. He refused to stop when warned, jumped the turnstile, and ran onto a train. Another story also said that he tried to take a hostage on the train.
They would be derelict in their duty to do anything less than kill him in the circumstances. Their duty is to protect the public, if possible, not to wait until a train is blown up and then pick up the pieces.
I tried to follow the link, but I somehow wound up on something called Page 3 and there were all these pictures of young, beautiful bare breasted women and I couldn't get out of the link!!
It was horrible,...horrible! Oh the humanity!!
I may have to go have a pint of beer to ease my trauma.
Better safe than sorry. Given the heavy jacket in warm weather, coming from a house under surveilance, and yes his ethnicity, killing him was the right course of action.
