July 21st, 2005 - WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, M.D. (R-TN) today announced that he would introduce the Support Our Scouts Act of 2005 as an amendment to the Department of Defense authorization bill. The amendment will ensure that the Boy Scouts of America are treated fairly by guaranteeing their right to equal access to public facilities, forums, and programs. This provision addresses attempts to exclude the Boy Scouts from such facilities at the federal, state, and local levels, and legal moves by groups to proscribe longstanding Defense Department support to the Scouts.
The following is a statement Senator Frist delivered this morning on the Senate floor:
I plan to offer an amendment to the Defense bill to preserve the long-standing relationship between the Department of Defense and the Boy Scouts of America. This legislation is necessary to press back on lawsuits that seek to sever the ties between our military, which has hosted the Boy Scout Jamboree on its bases. Americas youth can learn so much from the men and women in uniform love of country, commitment to values, sacrifice for others.

bump for my rowen...rto
This is such excellent news. And I'm pleased as punch our Republican leadership is standing up for the Boy Scouts.
Yes, what about the "CLOSE OUR BORDERS ACT OF 2005"
Nah, that would be too difficult.
The fact that we must sign a petition in support of the Boy Scouts is sad commentary on the upside-down state of America.
A collection of sociopaths, psychopaths, the disturbed, & the depraved have control of our nation..and THAT'S why it's upside-down Humanity's bottom-dwellers have ascended to power.
There is a lot going on...but let me tell you this from MY point of view. The war we are in is more than physical, it is spiritual, and the ACLU defends the enemy, and fights the government's efforts against terrorism. They also fight our moral foundation. This is a part of the morals they are tearing apart. In this spiritual war we are fighting EVIL, and nothing less. This was good news for the good guys in my opinion, and thats why I was excited about it.
On another note...in this war against evil I want to ask every freeper here to PRAY. Prayer is THE most powerful weapon we have against evil, and it is too often underestimated.
It is sad, but the socialist liberal activists have brought us to this point.
Wish I could see that one come through. Tancredo seems to be taking the lead on that one....maybe.
It's not superfluous. It's a small but an integral part in defending our Christian-based heritage. This is a good thing in that we have to regain ground that the ACLU has taken.
sorry dude.....
but all you are positing is that you have no clue!
"Holy cow! Frist has grown a pair? Kick @$$! Keep it up!!"
EXACTLY what I thought when I read the article!!
The military has a very compelling public interest in hosting the BSA Jamboree. It provides a target rich environment for recruiting some of the most outstanding and capable young people in the country. BSA is an excellent primer for leg infantry. You learn camping, field sanitation, hiking and backpacking, rock climbing, wilderness survival, rigging and pioneering, cooking, rifle marksmanship and a lot of other skills that would be useful to a budding warrior.
This isn't a small matter. The Boy Scouts are an important organization for the youth of America, and without this legislation the Boy Scout Jamboree will be cancelled.
The Jamboree takes place on military bases, and the military provides logistical and other support which by accounting principles is deemed to cost money (if they were going to be on the base anyway I'm not sure if there is any REAL cost, but accounting is accounting).
The ACLU has fought to have this expenditure found in violation of the separation of CHURCH and STATE. Their argument is that since the Boy Scouts require duty to GOD, they are in fact a CHURCH (which is absurd) and therefore the Constitution FORBIDS (it doesn't) the Military from providing ANY AID to the Boy Scouts.
It is time to stop the war on people who have religious faith.
I'll close with this. In this day and age, too many people are looking for offense. But if we are going to all look for offense, it behooves us to offend the fewest people. The "religious" vastly outnumber the "non-religious", so if we are merely talking about offense and annoyance, I say annoy the minority.
If you want to argue that your tax dollars are being spent to support the Boy Scouts, I say that they are a worthy organization to be supported -- much more so than the ACLU or Planned Parenthood, both of whom receive large sums of Government (tax) money.
Yeah, Tancredo's got the lead on THAT one, when he isn't suggesting the solution to our problem is to bomb Mecca.
This bill forces the leftists to come out against the Boy Scouts. Their doing so will result in a firestorm of criticism. Thus, they will lose support.
Try to look at the big picture. Stuff like this is what gets more peope on our side.
Too late MilkFrist
Amen! It all starts with the youth. I was at a retirement ceremony today (I'm airforce). Kids were running wild afterword while we were eating and stuff. We found that Arthur cartoon...the one where Buster Bunny met the lesbian parents of a family and it got so many up and arms...well this one was about Muslim tolerance.
Point being...our youth are very impressionable...organizations like the Scouts provide good impressions and install morals. The youth are our future.
I agree, but this isn't so much "in the big picture" about destroying leftist support, as it is just doing the right thing.
Now there is a nice warm fuzzy amendment that has absolutly nothing to do with what he is supposed to be doing in the Seante. But I guess it will help quiet down some of the complaints about his utter failure as the Senate Majority Leader.
John Bolton is still out there waiting and Frist offers an amendment that has absolutly no place int he Senate. This is the sort of thing that should be done in the House. Madison must be spinning in his grave.
It IS the right thing to do, but it is also politically astute.
