'Raging Grannies' Want to Enlist in Army

'Raging Grannies' Want to Enlist in Army TUCSON, Ariz. — They call themselves the "Tucson Raging Grannies (search)" and range in age from 65 to 81. And despite being decades older than the maximum age for recruits, they're upset because they can't enlist in the Army. Five members of the group are fighting trespassing charges after they were cited at a protest here last week at the military recruitment center. The group has protested on Wednesdays for the last three years outside the recruitment center. But on July 13, five grannies went inside to try to enlist and were cited. "We went in asking to be sent to Iraq so our kids and grandchildren can be sent home, but rather than listening to us, they called the police," said 74-year-old Betty Schroeder. "It was their place to tell us the qualifications, but they wouldn't even speak to us. They should've said, `You're too old.'" Schroeder said her group may approach the Pentagon (search) to see if they could be sent to Iraq. Nancy Hutchinson, spokeswoman at the Army recruiting headquarters in Phoenix which oversees Tucson's recruiters, said people who disagree with the war should be contacting their legislators instead of bothering recruiters. "They need to direct their frustrations at people who have the power to change things," Hutchinson said. "Recruiters don't make policy and they can't change policy. They have a job to do and they are following orders." Schroeder said she hopes the trespassing charges will be dropped and an apology given to the group from the Tucson Police Department (search) and from the recruiters. "This was not a performance, a joke or civil disobedience," she said. "This was an enlistment attempt."

Why don't they just pool their resources and head for Bagdad. The Iraqi military may not be so particular.

Oh, yes, I'd like to join as well, but I want to be at least a colonel.

Call their bluff... Slap them in uniform and send them to Iraq (in a non combat capacity - perhaps they can bake cookies for the troops over there).

This is a silly antiwar protest. I say bundle the raging grannies off to Iraq - they would make ideal IED detectors.

I think their behavior is disgraceful and disruptive.

They are wasting the time of everyone involved, and are only doing so as a protest against the war.

My interpretation of this story is that they are not doing this because they are patriotic and want to fight for their country. They are doing it "so our young people don't have to die in this war".

They are crazy old liberal harpies, and I spit on them. Pa-toowie.

why "good for them"?

they want to go to Iraq so they're grandkids can be sent home? Sounds like a leftist tactic

What don't they get...? They are too old for enlisting. If they really want to help why not get some kind of network going in sending supplies to the troops already over there. Now that is Grandmas work.

I hope they're charged the maximum they can be charged for taking their little anti-war protest to the recruiter's office.

They're idiots!

I read the headline and first few sentences only about these grannies. If they are anti-war, and this is their tactic, then I take back every nice thing I said about them. LOL

My gran who died last year was all in favour of killing the terrorists. I could imagine her whacking Mustafa or Abdul over the head with a broom. The same spirit is on your side of the Atlantic.

Regards, Ivan

These aren't patriotic grandmothers, they're Dem/commy/lib protesters and disrupters.

Go Grannies, Go staight to jail, do not pass go.

The name of their group is pathetic too.

I hereby rename them The "Raging Pathetic Grannies," or RPGs.

I dunno ... wanting to go to Iraq so their kids and grandkids can stay home sounds more like an antiwar protest to me. The article isn't exactly clear on this point given what the army's spokesbabe said, "people who disagree with the war should be contacting their legislators instead of bothering recruiters."

These are lefty whackjobs. From the Raging Grannie Seattle site:
Our Mission: In the tradition of wise women elders, the mission of the Seattle Raging Grannies is to promote global peace, justice, and social and economic equality by raising public awareness through the medium of song and humor.

Our goal is to challenge our audiences to work to bring about the social changes that are required in order to end economic oppression, particularly of women and children, and to end racial inequality, environmental destruction, human rights violations, and arms proliferation.

We model ourselves after the Canadian Raging Grannies. We use tunes of old songs and write lyrics to fit what we sing about. We are challenged to keep step with current issues.

What Are We Raging About? We are enraged about the poor conditions that people are forced to endure in their lives, and about the condition of the earth that will be left to our precious grandchildren. We sing out to gain respect for all persons and encourage everyone to grow above their prejudices. We rage against "corporate greed" and sign for "one world" in which JUSTICE is evident everywhere and PEACE reigns.
