If there had been Islamic jihadis killing people here and there when Jefferson wrote those words, he would not have given all Muslims a blanket welcome.

What I wonder is why you keep supporting Islam, as though the terrorists just "happened" to be Muslim, instead of the fact that Islam is the actual driving force of their hatred and anger.

Naturally, not all Muslims are filled with the same insane anger and hatred. But enough are, and it is being taught widely, to connect Muslims + insane anger + hatred = terrorism.

We had issues with Muslims during the Jefferson administration. He saw people as individuals, as did virtually all of the other prominent Founders and Framers.

Why do I "keep supporting Islam". Actually, I don't. I support the right of American Muslims to the same religious liberties the rest of us have. I refuse to tar them all with the behavior of a few, any more than I would tar all Christians with Rudolph, Hill, Waagoner, et al.

Individuals are responsible for their own actions. Actions may be sanctioned. In the nation Jefferson and his contemporaries built, beliefs may not.

What got me thinking this way was the suicide bombers in Iraq who are now blowing up mosques and killing innocent Muslims. When Muslims are blowing up mosques and killing Muslims supposedly in defense of Islam, something very strange is going on psychologically. It suggests a split in the psyche; it suggests a psychosis deeper than Islam in which part of the psyche has in fact split off from Islam and is battling the part that is trying to hang on to Islam. These acts of suicidal violence make more sense as failures of psychic integration than as coherent expressions of Islam, even of militant Islam. (Now donning flame retardant suit.)
