Canada Legalizes Gay Marriage

Posted: July 20, 2005 at 3:10 p.m. Updated: July 20, 2005 at 3:15 p.m.

TORONTO (AP) -- Canada legalized gay marriage Wednesday, becoming the world's fourth nation to grant full legal rights to same-sex couples.

Supreme Court Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin signed the legislation making it law, hours after it was approved by the Senate late Tuesday night despite strong opposition from Conservatives and religious leaders.

The bill grants same-sex couples legal rights equal to those in traditional unions between a man and a woman, something already legal in eight of Canada's 10 provinces and in two of its three territories.

The legislation drafted by Prime Minister Paul Martin's minority Liberal Party government easily passed the Senate, which essentially rubber stamps any bill already passed by the House of Commons, which passed it late last month.

The Netherlands, Belgium and Spain are the only other nations that allow gay marriage nationwide.

All I can say is thank goodness O'Connor is gone. Now all we need is to convince Kennedy to give us the 5th vote on this until Ginsberg or Stevens leave or die.

Is it any surprise that those 3 nations have been under siege by Muslims for the past 5 years?

We can't defend ourselves from anything worse than a thunderstorm ... we beg people to turn off their air conditioning in heat waves because we've closed down local power plants to prevent smog ... people die in the parking lots of our hospitals waiting to get in and be seen ... but by God we can welcime homosexuals to town to get married, and at the same time kick our own local Miss Universe out of the city despite her being invited to open the Thai Food Festival (she is Thai) for being "demeaning to gender roles" because she's a beauty queen!

That'll show those Americans.

Conservative Christian Canadians are sick at heart. In effect, their nation has just sanctioned homosexuality---to their shame.

This should be a warning to us and increase our determination not to allow such a thing to happen here.

At the same time, we need all the help we can get to take this issue to the next election and defeat those who voted in favor of gay marriage.

Canadians did NOT want this kind of dictatorship from Mr. Dithers!!! Worst of all, if it weren't for Quebec separatists, this would have been dead long ago!!!

Didn't you hear Schumer yesterday after Roberts was nominated, talking about how this nomination is so important to question because the Supreme Court "MAKES LAW"???

So, either Schumer is admitting the Judicial Branch is out of control, or he doesn't know the basic structure of government.

On Fox News, during Brit's show, they had a little news break reporting on Canada legalizing gay marriage. Then ran a clip of a gay wedding. Did anyone else get a look at those "women" getting married. They were really scarey looking!!! I used to be all for woman-on-woman "action", but that clip has me rethinking my stance.

I am still waiting for that giant sucking sound that H. Ross Perot said would happen with NAFTA.

Maybe this is it?
