This was interesting: About 35,000 non-citizens are currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces, while another 12,000 serve in the Reserve Components. The navy has the largest proportion of non-citizens on active duty, almost 16,000, nearly half the total. The Marine Corps has about 6,500, the Army about 5,000, and the Air force about 3,000.

For a second I thought this thread was about UFO conspiracies.

Aliens have a frame of reference that gives them a greater appreciation of what they're fighting for.

this is one way to earn citizenship in the US. You have to be at least green card holder though. The military will not help you get permanent legal status so these are not illegals, just hard working legal immigrants to whom i say bravo.

Personally speaking, I was hoping to join after college to help with the war, but i have to wait at least 3 more years (when hopefully my green card application will be complete).

It probably would help recruitment if it were possible to long term legal residents to earn permanent residency as well whrough service.. they would certainly appreciate it more than the random people who just won the green card lottery (who can serve btw)

I remember one young Hispanic immigrant who graduated from high school in Southern California, got his green card and joined the Marines the next day, and died in Iraq when he through himself on a grenade, saving the lives of five fellow Marines.

I see no problem with your suggestion. I have more respect for immigrants in our armed forces than I have for a significant percentage of our citizens.

You're thinking of SGT Rafael Peralta. I'd love to see him awarded the Medal Of Honor for his heroism.

Non-citizens appear to make better soldiers and sailors.

This statement, based upon early attrition rates, really bothers me. I suspect it offends many fine service personnel who also happen to be citizens.

Citizenship or lack thereof should never be held up as a discriminator when talking about the sacrifices of the young men and women currently serving in America's armed forces.

Reminds me of a funny Simpsons episode where they go to an air show at an air force base and Homer stumbles on the hangar where they stash the UFO.

It is estimated that two million Hispanics have served with distinction in the armed forces, including 37,000 lawful permanent residents currently serving today. They are among the most highly decorated soldiers in U.S. military. Approximately 20 percent of Congressional Medal of Honor recipients have been immigrants.

Click on graphic:

If certain federal lawmakers have their way, your eighteen-year-old daughters will be registered for selective service and drafted for combat by the next war. Many women's rights advocates claim that Christians have long since abandoned the issue of women in the military. Sadly, far too many pastors and politicians were embarrassingly silent on this issue in the days leading up to the war against Iraq. In this special forum of key theologians and Christian thinkers, we throw down the gauntlet of God's Holy Word, to proclaim that it is biblically impermissible and a profound judgment upon our nation for men to abdicate their role as protectors and warriors by permitting and perpetuating the practice of women in the military.

"It is estimated that two million Hispanics have served with distinction in the armed forces"

A drop in the bucket when compared to the total of those who have served in the armed forces. Don't have the cumulative figures, but they must number in the, what, 100,000,000, perhaps more?

The fact is that Hispanics, as a percentage of the total, whether be numbers who have actually served in the armed forces or who go to the polls are a tiny irrelevant minority, even though they keep pouring across our borders illegally by the hundrends of thousands per year, if not millions.

It's a problem that must be addressed or we'll plunge into the abyss of third worldism. Fortunately, Congress Tom Tancredo, if elected to the presidency, will solve the burden of illegal aliens and close the floodgates.

"Frenchie" of 1/9 K.I.A. Vietnam was a Marine to get his citizenship sooner. A very brave and selfless man. He and I enlisted together, did boot camp together and partied on Okinawa before his last trip incountry.
