I remember one young Hispanic immigrant who graduated from high school in Southern California, got his green card and joined the Marines the next day, and died in Iraq when he through himself on a grenade, saving the lives of five fellow Marines.

You're thinking of SGT Rafael Peralta. I'd love to see him awarded the Medal Of Honor for his heroism.

It is estimated that two million Hispanics have served with distinction in the armed forces, including 37,000 lawful permanent residents currently serving today. They are among the most highly decorated soldiers in U.S. military. Approximately 20 percent of Congressional Medal of Honor recipients have been immigrants.

"Frenchie" of 1/9 K.I.A. Vietnam was a Marine to get his citizenship sooner. A very brave and selfless man. He and I enlisted together, did boot camp together and partied on Okinawa before his last trip incountry.
