Agreed! Roberts as a replacement for O'Connor makes this overall a huge win provided we get a Thomas like replacement for Rehnquist and Go from there. But I am happy with the pick for whatever the heck thats worth.

Houston, we have a problem! A member of the public interest law firm Pacific Legal Foundation has pointed out on a Sacramento Radio Talk Show (Mark Williams KFBK) that the nominee seemed to really relish defending The TRPA (Tahoe Regional Planning Authority) before the Supreme Court to keep a beseiged widow from being completely stipped of her ability from even bringing a case into court to seek the ability to even build on her own property!!! (TRPA vs Suitum, I believe)
Cited other cases, too... Not good!!! Especially in light of the awful decision just made by the SCOTUS!!!

....maybe he was 'educated' by the Borking of Robert Bork and from 1987 onward has crafted a careful public record in preparation for this very day. I remember clearly thinking about that (in general) in 1987: that after the Senator from Chappaquidick had made 'borking' into a new noun in the English language, no lawyer who had hopes of a nomination to the SCOTUS would ever want to go on record with political opinions, conservative ideas, etc. I can't say whether Ann Coulter is right to worry - I don't know enough about him, which may itself lend support to her worries that he does have Souter potential (we would all KNOW it before now if he were someone certain to give the left fits). I'm cautiously optimistic, but I sure do hope he's more of a 'stealth' candidate for our side than for the Souters of the world..... the only genuinely constructionist/conservative judges that have come along in my lifetime were already well known to be just that. there was no room for doubt. this is way too risky.

True, that's why I also said
"we would all KNOW it before now if he were someone certain to give the left fits"
I'm hoping there's more going on here and that he's not just a stealth Souter....

If they had any principles or made any sense it'd be worth bothering with them. Don't sweat it.
Good point! While I voted for W twice he has been lacking in several key points. He is still the best that was on the market at the time. I am hard pressed to think of another that could have handles himself any better during these trying times. There is no such thing as pleasing all the people all the time. I just wish he would stand up and do something, anything, with illegal immigration.
Actually I was hoping for a real hard liner for his first pick. I am just itchin to shove the DimWits filibuster down their throats. I'm so sick of obstructionists you'd think I had ptomaine. Jones is a slam dunk. The Dems can't hardly do anything but moan and groan a little since he has already passed their scrutiny within the last 2 years.

I'm hoping there's more going on here and that he's not just a stealth Souter There's zero chance he is a Souter.
There's an outside chance he could become a Kennedy ... same is true of almost any nominee.
My take is that he's not quite a Scalia, most likely a Rehnquist ... and that's not half bad.

willing to extend the Executive Branch wide flexibility in both its conduct of general official business and the War on Terror. That is a BIGGIE!
