Source: Clement Not Bush's Choice for High Court Source Tells ABC News Much-Discussed Potential Candidate Isn't the White House's Choice for Supreme Court Jul. 19, 2005 - Judge Edith Clement -- perceived by many observers as a potential frontrunner for the Supreme Court seat vacated by Justice Sandra Day O'Connor -- is not President Bush's choice for the high court.
An informed source told ABC News they had spoken with Clement and said she received a phone call from the White House this afternoon. According to the source, Clement was thanked for meeting with the president and sharing her views on the Supreme Court, but that the administration has decided to go in a "different direction."
The White House said Bush will announce his selection tonight at 9 p.m. ET.
A U.S. Court of Appeals judge for the 5th Circuit, Clement was nominated to her current position by Bush and was confirmed by the Senate in November 2001.
Speculation has swirled about the nomination since O'Connor announced her retirement on July 1.
O'Connor, 75, was the first female justice to serve on the High Court, and many speculated that Bush would choose a woman to replace her.
Clement was considered a leading candidate to replace her, along with her colleague on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit in New Orleans, Edith Hollan Jones.

"That is who I am thinking too...I keep getting the two Ediths mixed up...Clement is the more libertarian one and Jones is the more social-conservative one?"
If they get on the Court, ask me in a couple of years!
lol
You may be right, but I can just see the Democrats and their "moderate" lapdogs telling us that "She has not had enough years on the appeals court."
Because they delayed her confirmation for two or three years.
"Of course, the hard liberals like Boxer and Kennedy would likely still attempt a filibuster even if it is a suicidal one (if they aren't even close to the required votes)..."
La-oo-oo-oo-oosss-ssss-ssers!
"Call forwarding?"
"cell phone"
Anyone here following tradesports? I shorted Edith Jones at 54 and she's down to 36. I bought Miguel Estrada at 0.50. If he gets picked my $2.00 becomes $400!
They definatly do, I prefer Luttig, in that he is 50 years old I think and in good health, and a solid conservative, I'm not as sure about Roberts yet.
Luttig is 51; Roberts is 49.
Edith Clement has written on the subject of abortion rights that Roe is settled law. If that's what her current views are now, there will be hell to pay if Bush nominates her..
Sadly, Ginsberg was "foisted" on us by one of our own conservatives, Orrin Hatch (friend of mine sent me this):
