CAMDEN, N.J. — Three boys who suffocated in a car trunk last month were alive for at least 17 hours, slowly succumbing while police searched their neighborhood, a lawyer for the family of one of the boys says. Lawyer Peter M. Villari told The New York Times that officials of the Camden County prosecutor's office went over details of an autopsy report with him, the newspaper reported Tuesday. The boys, ages 5, 6 and 11, disappeared from the yard where they were playing a little after 5 p.m. on June 22. Their deaths were ruled accidental. Relatives searched for the boys for three hours and then called authorities. A two-day search that included dogs, helicopters and boats on the nearby Delaware River ended when the father of one of the boys found them dead in the trunk of an inoperable car sitting just feet from where they had been playing. The autopsy report, which has not been released publicly, found that the boys died between 10:30 a.m. on June 23 and 2:30 a.m. on June 24, Villari said. That estimate was based on fluid and tissue samples and weather data, he said. Villari told the newspaper that responsibility for the deaths is now "squarely on the shoulders of the police." "I think the numbers speak for themselves," he said. "They were certainly alive when the police arrived and certainly well after the search started." Villari did no immediately return a call seeking additional comment Tuesday. The prosecutors' office had no immediate comment.

So the police are responsible for the behavior of these children and the lack of responsibility of the parents. This is a tragedy, not a crime, but I guess in Camden, someone's done gots to get paid.
Uh, since the police searched the car while the boys were alive in the trunk.
And the police missed them.

My thoughts exactly. Where the hell were the parents? Why wasn't the lock on the trunk of the inoperable car removed? Where were the parents? What were they thinking?
There was a three hour search before the police were called. Why weren't the kids found?
No, I do not think they do, and certainly no criminal or financial responsibility. This community always tries to blame the police for their shortcomings. This entire incident belongs squarely on the shoulders of poor (if existent at all) parenting. The person who left the trunk open or otherwise accessible to children - their fault 100%.
How tragic, the police really should have looked in that car.. But missing something in a seach does not make them responable for not supervising the kids, and to be fair how many of us have our eyes on an 11 year old all the time?
And why didn't anyone hear the boys inside?
I don't know the year model of the car but did it have an inside trunk release handle? One of those boys was 11 and I've seen some very resourceful 11 year olds, something doesn't seem plausible. How 'bout kicking the back seat in, at least to get a little more air? An 11 year old can cause lots of damage to some of those panels, make lots of noise too. Many unanswered questions.

Surely everyone (including the police) were within a few feet of this car...especially during the start of the searching. Were these kids not kicking and screaming inside the trunk, off and on, for at least two or three hours? I would think the average 3-4 year old (and these kids were a little older, weren't they?) would be making a heck of a racket to get out!
The police bear A LOT of responsibility for this negligence.
And they WILL pay.
The police were not called until 3 hours after the boys went missing.
What about the stories of the plastic bag over one kids head and the cement bag over them. I just dont se how they could search right there and the kids did not make nay noise.

There is some question as to whether or not the police could have been more thorough in the initial search of the vehicle but I agree that the parents bear the responsibility for their children.
By the way, that's cute the way you put the parents in their place and at the same time made fun of the way some people in Camden talk. Give yourself two pats on the back. Nicely done.

If the children were playing within feet of the car before they disappeared wouldn't that be one of the first places a normal person would look?
Trying to make a few bucks off this tragedy is what they're doing. People who don't take responsibility for their own stupidity make me sick!
