breaking, more to come
Most Americans supported the war right up till the end in 73. Keep in mind, Tet, when Uncle Walter joined forces with Uncle Ho, was in the Spring of 68. Four years later, despite an all out media blitz in the news rooms, on TV, in Hollywood, in the recording studios, and in the salons of so-called "opinion makers" the pro-victory candidate for president defeated the "cut and run" candidate by the largest electorial margin in history. Nixon carried 49 of 50 states in 1972 and had 60%+ of the popular vote over the anti-war McGovern.
Don't buy the crap that America turned against the war. That is pure revisionist history.
"but we showed the commie pricks that we were willing to fight them anytime and anywhere on the earth, to serve the cause of freedom."
That message was not lost on the likes of Castro and Danny Ortega. They talked their trash about Vietnam. But, when push came to shove (in Grenada, Honduras, El Salvador, etc.), they were not willing to pay the price that we set and collected from the North Vietnamese.
"Tell them what it was for."
How about: No more Soviet Union and East Germany. No more Warsaw Pact. Daniel Ortega and his pretty red scarf are not running the show anymore in Nicaragua. What is Fidel up to these days? The 10+ year holding-action in Southeast Asia contributed to all of this. Vietnam can be analogized to the Battle of Bunker Hill. We did not hold the field at the end of that day in 1775, but we extracted a price in blood that the enemy, Communism, was unwilling to keep paying and it postured us for a larger victory. That is a legacy to be proud of.
Thanks for that perspective.
R.I.P., our Leader.
I salute you with the deepest respect.
Interesting how those idiots bash Westy and put no blame for the debacle in Vietnam on one of their greatest heroes, LBJ.
Ultimately South Vietnam fell.
2 years after
all combat troops were withdrawn by Jan, '73.......
commies "took" Saigon in Apr, '75.
"56,000 dead. For nothing."
Hopefully, you did not mean that.
You label answering the call of our nation nothing? It is abundantly clear that these patriots not only answered the nations call, but made the ultimate sacrifice in doing so.
I find this remark very insulting to the many of us that are Viet Nam veterans.
It is suggested that you retract that statement.

The last Major Battle of the Vietnam War:
WATERGATE =
No NIXON to kick around any more.
No NIXON around to carry a B-52 big stick over our Communist Terrorist Enemy North Vietnam.
No NIXON around to protect the Freedom of others in a then Free South Vietnam.
No NIXON around to repel $6 Billion in Soviet Aid to Communist North Vietnam for its Final Solution in the South.
No NIXON around to prevent this:

I read you post with great interest.
Your observations were straight on as once more over the horizon looms a gathering menace. When one reads of history it is best they have in front of them a world map to view. It simplifies with a picture in your mind of what one is reading.
From Japan to Australia, China is slowly but surely clearing and or trying to neutralize its rear area. The only glue that is keeping that line of free countries together is the United States. Will we fight once more to keep those countries free??????
Yes we will, and it will not be in vain.

" Ah yes... the Treaty of Paris, thr negotiated peace that indicated Great Britain did not lose the American Revolution."
Sorry I should have been more specific, don't assume anything.
I was refering to the Paris Peace Accord 1973.
Sorry.
A man who was given a war and then prevented from winning it. I salute you, sir, and was honored to serve in your command.
I think you picked the wrong place to say THAT!
How did we lose in Bosnia? We stopped the civil war there, and that was our war aim.

Dan Rather will be judged as the most inaccurate, biased lame brain reporter in American history.
Umm.. I think the refugees from Vietnam would disagree.
