Bush Drops Hints on Supreme Court Choice

WASHINGTON - President Bush gave the nation several clues Saturday about the person he will nominate for a seat on the Supreme Court, except for the most important one — a name.

In his weekly radio address, Bush said his eventual nominee will be a "fair-minded individual who represents the mainstream of American law and American values."

His candidate also "will meet the highest standards of intellect, character and ability and will pledge to faithfully interpret the Constitution and laws of our country," the president said.

"Our nation deserves, and I will select, a Supreme Court justice that Americans can be proud of," he said, without revealing the name that many are anxious to hear.

Bush also discussed his recent meeting with Senate leaders of both parties to discuss the nomination and confirmation process for a replacement for Sandra Day O'Connor. The first woman to serve on the high court, O'Connor announced July 1 that she is stepping down after 24 years.

It is the standard response from the Sky Is Falling Brigade to any Bush statement or action. The Brigade is so far out on the Fringe that is meets the DU whackjobs and shares their enimity to the President. Trolls or idiots? Take your pick.

Sell-out coming. Aisle 4.

One of either two things is happening here:

A) Bush is "innoculating" the situation by getting his message out ahead of the naysayers and setting the stage.."this person is mainstream". (Regardless of if the libs think he/she is "extreme").

B) The person IS someone that the libs consider "mainstream", which will be a fatal move on Dubya's part and will split the Republican party so significantly that we will lose the WH and Senate in 06 and 08.

My bet is (B), unfortunately.

"Hint" to me offers actual clues as to who the person is. What a waste of a story.

... and AP is a waste of an excuse for a news organization.

We're going to see the nomination of Gonzales, I fear, on a take-it-or-leave-it basis.

Which nomination to any federal court by this President leads you to believe he will nominate anyone who doesn't believe in original intent? So far, his federal appointees have been exactly what we have asked for.

Hell to pay?

Perhaps. They'll surely lose seats in 2006 -- I won't be the only voter who won't play on the come any longer.

Voted for Mr. Bush in 2004, very reluctantly, because an al-Qerry presidency would have been utterly intolerable, and because it was clear that some number of justices would have to retire in 2005-2008.

If -- as it now appears -- Mr. Bush intends to give us more of the same as Stevens, O'Connor, Souter (all Pubbie nominees), then, as Samuel B. Goldwyn once famously noted, ''Gentlemen, you may include me out.''

Oh gee, what a surprise. I think he said this very thing during the 2000 campaign and I believe I heard it a time or two during the 2004 campaign.

""We all believe that conservative ideas are mainstream, and that it is the left that is extreme. I think that the President probably believes this too. So, what is wrong with his words?""

youre 100% right. So many conservatives here have fallen for the left's propaganda that it is conservatives who are out of the mainstream. When people here on FR hear the words mainstream and fair minded, they automaticallly exclude themselves and others with like philosphies and they automatically think RINO. Its pathetic.

Perhaps some here could have a bit more confidence in their own views to take the position that Pres Bush was taling about a conservative.

So you would prefer Prez Hillary and all sorts of ultra-liberal Democrats in both Houses? When you say they have to "pay" you really are saying we ALL have to pay, if you vote for a 3rd party or go all the way in rebellion and "giving a message" and vote for the Democrat, as some have suggested they'll do. I do not see the logic in that, but I do know who gains. And it sure isn't those of us who lean to the right.

W" is an idiot. Does he think that conservatives in the Senate will support a limp wristed, lacy cuffed, main stream "W" pick?

If history is any indication, his pick will be in the same vein as Janice Rogers Brown or that type of constructionist judge. but if course if history is any guide, you have made your mind long before about "W" being an idiot too....

"What do you expect him to say?"

Right, the theory that Bush is just placating the leftists while actually planning the ol' conservative bait and switch at the last minute.

When he said he was going to burden us with a money hungry prescription drug plan that is exactly what he did.

When he said he was going to throw loads of our cash at public education with no means of accountability that's exactly what he did.

And when his statement implies that he plans to make the judicial branch nothing more than an enforcer of popular will I'm going to believe that as well.

The only thing that that dildo, little Chuckie Schumer, ever got right in his life was his statement that Supreme Court nominations are a different breed than circuit and appellate court nominations. Mr. Bush's record on these latter nominations is not relevant to the discussion of Supreme Court nominations; extrapolation is simply invalid here.
