Bush Drops Hints on Supreme Court Choice

WASHINGTON - President Bush gave the nation several clues Saturday about the person he will nominate for a seat on the Supreme Court, except for the most important one — a name.

In his weekly radio address, Bush said his eventual nominee will be a "fair-minded individual who represents the mainstream of American law and American values."

His candidate also "will meet the highest standards of intellect, character and ability and will pledge to faithfully interpret the Constitution and laws of our country," the president said.

"Our nation deserves, and I will select, a Supreme Court justice that Americans can be proud of," he said, without revealing the name that many are anxious to hear.

Bush also discussed his recent meeting with Senate leaders of both parties to discuss the nomination and confirmation process for a replacement for Sandra Day O'Connor. The first woman to serve on the high court, O'Connor announced July 1 that she is stepping down after 24 years.

"represents the mainstream of American law"

Well that's just super-duper. No need to buck the trend, just make sure they're a popular pick.

Mainstream? I think that means Gonzales.

These are hints?

Would the AP think it was a "hint" if Bush said he'd pick a carbon-based lifeform?

Bush said his eventual nominee will be a "fair-minded individual who represents the mainstream of American law and American values."

We know what this means, since everybody knows conservatives are "extremists" who are out of the "mainstream."

We all believe that conservative ideas are mainstream, and that it is the left that is extreme. I think that the President probably believes this too. So, what is wrong with his words?

If he sells conservatives out the Republicans will have hell to pay in 06 or 08 if not both.

What do you expect him to say?

"I promise to pick a Supreme Court Justice who will really anger the radical left and allow the MSM to rip through his background, possibly dividing the voting base even further" just doesn't sound quite right to me...from a politics standpoint...

I don't think there's anything wrong with what he has said. President Bush has made excellent nominations to the federal courts, and I expect he'll do the same for the Supreme Court. His use of of the word "mainstream" strikes me as shaping the battlefield, and I remain hopeful that he will nominate a true pro-life conservative to the Supreme Court.

Boy, that tells us alot.

Sounds like a cut and paste of his campaign slogans from 2000 and 2004.

"Hint" to me offers actual clues as to who the person is.

What a waste of a story.

As long as Garza or Estrada are cooking 'em, I don't mind one little bit.

I absolutely don't want to hear the terms 'mainstream' and 'acceptable' and 'values' and 'proud of' in this discussion -- the only valid basis for the discussion and the decision of whom to nominate is the degree of fealty of the nominee to the content and the intent of the Constitution as written, which imnnho should be near-absolute.

We're going to see the nomination of Gonzales, I fear, on a take-it-or-leave-it basis.

OK, fine. I'll leave it. And I'll leave the RINOs and gun-grabbers and Bushbots who push this nominee-presumptive, to themselves.

It isn't the MAINSTREAM of American law that is the problem.
Leftist lunacy is NOT mainstream. Bush will give us a justice who understands that even if you don't.

I concur. There is no "hint" given in this address.

You shouldn't read anything into this one way or the other about who he's going to pick. It's just what he feels he's expected to say as POTUS, like when he did that barf alert praising of the Klintoons when he unveiled portraits of the two lowlifes at the White House.

Part of his job description is just saying yada yada yada BS at certain events and certain times, and then just doing what he's going to do anyway.

Still, he might appoint Gonzales ... Janice Rogers Brown, Luttig ... who the heck has the crystal ball ???

"W" is an idiot. Does he think that conservatives in the Senate will support a limp wristed, lacy cuffed, main stream "W" pick? The man is completely off of the reservation. What a disappointment.
