Bush Drops Hints on Supreme Court Choice

WASHINGTON - President Bush gave the nation several clues Saturday about the person he will nominate for a seat on the Supreme Court, except for the most important one — a name.

In his weekly radio address, Bush said his eventual nominee will be a "fair-minded individual who represents the mainstream of American law and American values."

His candidate also "will meet the highest standards of intellect, character and ability and will pledge to faithfully interpret the Constitution and laws of our country," the president said.

"Our nation deserves, and I will select, a Supreme Court justice that Americans can be proud of," he said, without revealing the name that many are anxious to hear.

Bush also discussed his recent meeting with Senate leaders of both parties to discuss the nomination and confirmation process for a replacement for Sandra Day O'Connor. The first woman to serve on the high court, O'Connor announced July 1 that she is stepping down after 24 years.

Nobody is demanding absolute ideological purity (except the Democrats). We just want people who can be depended on to follow the law - and not their personal preferences - as is the definition of the job.

There are hints in the full transcript:

My nominee will be a fair-minded individual who represents the mainstream of American law and American values. The nominee will meet the highest standards of intellect, character, and ability, and will pledge to faithfully interpret the Constitution and laws of our country.

Sounds good to me.

If he sells conservatives out the Republicans will have hell to pay in 06 or 08 if not both.

He has already sold conservatives out, so there's nothing to stop him from doing it again.

''Bush Drops Hints on Supreme Court''

Uh, ok, you've stumped me. How and by what standard(s) is this a 'liberal' headline? And who's 'off the handle'', in any event?

Sellout does have its own special stench, and I've in no way made (unlike some here) any ad hominem comments at all.

Or is it simply that you don't like people to disagree with you. Well, if that's the case, good luck to you.

I'm betting GW will thumb his nose at his conservative base and nominate Alberto Gonzales.

The radical Dems have already more-or-less indicated that they would approve Gonzales fairly easily (also thumbing their noses at the conservative).

A win for GW. He doesn't have to face re-election.
A win for Gonzales. He could very will be in line then for Chief Justice position.
A win for the radical Dems.

So who loses?

As noted in another post, you can't trade until the mkt opens...and this mkt is closed right now.

We'll soon see, won't we?

Let the man make his nomination before we begin to attack him. If Bush's appellate court nominations are something to go by, "mainstream" for Bush is someone like a Janice Rogers Brown. I'll be fine with that.

Seeing how you ooze hate toward the President, I seriously doubt he cares what you and those like you think. You hated him before he became President so appeasing your kind is impossible and something the President is smart enough to not even consider.

"Mainstream" can mean a lot of things. I think we should trust Bush on this for now and wait to see who the nominee is.

Uh by your typical kneejerk frothing mouth reaction over an article.

You hated him before he became President

Another one of your silly lies. I voted for him in 2000, but haven't liked him since then. I switched to the Constitution Party because of him.

,I>If this means "President Hillary" and loss of the Senate, so be it. I mean..at this point, what is the difference? There ain't much.

Wait till she's in the WH and then ask what's the difference! You don't remember Bill? You don't remember all the freedom we lost with him in the WH? You don't see all the gains we have made with W in the White house? If you answered no to any of these questions you should go in for a little therapy immediately.

Personally I think anyone who votes for Hillary, or votes third party and lets Hillary win, is a traitor to this country and to any conservative ideals. You think the recent imminent domain ruling was bad? Wait for Hillary to get in office, especially if she has a Dem majority in the senate!

Then you can say hello dictatorship, goodby America!

Who loses? That's easy.

The Republican party will be literally split in two and completely demoralized by the wrong pick here.

Enough so that the Senate and WH easily go (D) in '06/'08.

A pick that does not fall with what the base wants will be sticking a knife in our backs, and there will be a heavy price.

I fear that this is what Rove and the other "architects" (I have to cough when I say that) don't realize. And it will be fatal to our party if so.

You must believe that GWB has followed a conservative agenda. I don't believe that. My opinion, no tinfoil needed.

What I think Bush means is that he will pick a Constitutional conservative with a non-confrontational demeanor who has no paper trail for the 'Rats to distrot.

I'm predicting that he will nominate Federal Judge Edith Brown Clements, who is all of those things.
