Dem Strategist Suggests on MSNBC that President May Be Focus of Leak Probe
MSNBC News | 07/16/2005 | MSNBC

Posted on 07/16/2005 7:55:07 AM PDT by RightFighter

On MSNBC a little while ago, they had a story about the "politics of the CIA leak". The reporter was interviewing Pat Buchanan and Democratic strategist Peter Fenn. What follows is the best transcript I could piece together quickly. I've quoted Fenn word for word.

PAT BUCHANAN: It's very, very serious...There is a credibility problem for the press secretary...There is no legal problem for Rove...Reporters in Washington have a gleam in their eye and smiles on their faces, and there's a reason for it...Pat Fitzgerald hasn't been digging for two years and judges haven't been sending reporters to jail because they don't have anything...Everyone in town (Washington) feels there is something very, very serious and today's story in the NY Times where a memo was floating around aboard Air Force One about Wilson's trip to Africa indicates this could be very big stuff.

ALEX: Peter, what kind of big stuff could Pat be referring to?

PETER FENN: Alex, this is not a third-rate burglary. The focus had been on White House staff. Now, as Pat says, with this memo from the State Department about Wilson, about his wife, about the connection, it was brought onto Air Force One by Secretary Powell. I cannot imagine, Alex, that if he's going up and down the aisles with that memo as he was supposed to have been, that he did not discuss it with the President of the United States. I cannot imagine that there were not phone calls from Ari Fleischer, the Press Secretary who was on board, back to the White House about this. This was precisely at the time when Wilson was about to publish his article. Folks knew about his position about weapons of mass destruction. I have a sense that this may go all the way to the top.

Uh, sure it does, Mr Fenn. Everyone from the White House janitor to the President knows that Joe Wilson is a liar and his wife is a Democrat operative whose identity was known to everyone in Washington. They are laughing at this nonsense all the way to the top. And soon, the top of the NYT, Pinch Sulzberger will himself be ruined by this non-story.

Try what? Impeachment?

With what votes? We control both houses.

They can talk to the cows come home; it's just a diversion.

HDNet has been showing "All of the President's Men" pretty much non-stop for a few weeks now. The left is hoping this will be a Watergate type scenario.

Notice that the left are already asking questions in the form of "What did he know and when did he know it?" They hope is certainly that even if the Rove incident is innocent, somehow they can obtain secret conversations like the Nixon tapes that will bring down the president.

This makes me so mad because Bush and the senate republicans have been such a disappointment on some very major issues. There were some good signs that the conservative base was getting very restless and coming close to forcing the administration and the senate to act like true conservatives.

Now, with this crap, both sides will just close ranks and it will be a my team against your team type scenario.

I was quite frankly shocked that Buchanan supported Bush during the last election.

Well, in Buchanan's "endorsement" of George W. Bush, he wrote:

Iraq is the worst strategic blunder in our lifetime. And for it, George W. Bush, his War Cabinet, and the neoconservatives who plotted and planned this war for a decade bear full responsibility.

Then Buchanan wrote this about George W. Bush:

And the returns from his mid-life conversion to neoconservatism are now in:

• A guerrilla war in Iraq is dividing and bleeding America with no end in sight. It carries the potential for chaos, civil war, and the dissolution of that country.

• Balkanization of America and the looming bankruptcy of California as poverty and crime rates soar from an annual invasion of indigent illegals is forcing native-born Californians to flee the state for the first time since gold was found at Sutter’s Mill.

• A fiscal deficit of 4 percent of GDP and merchandise trade deficit of 6 percent of GDP have produced a falling dollar, the highest level of foreign indebtedness in U.S. history, and the loss of one of every six manufacturing jobs since Bush took office.

So it wasn't what you'd call a "ringing endorsement". He just said Kerry was worse.

I think this validates much of what Pukin Dog has been talking about this past little while.

The 'Rats have ALWAYS lusted after an opportunity to impeach Bush, but they better be damn careful what they wish for, even IF they were successful (and they would not be), they would end up with President Dick Cheney, and I REALLY REALLY REALLY *love* the sound of THAT!

In every post about Wilson/Rove, remind everyone that Sandy Berger, National Security Advisor for President Clinton IS GOING TO JAIL.

IF....Sandy "Socks" Berger...goes to jail, for even a day, I will run naked through the worst chigger/tick infested place in my local forest.

Never gonna happen.

Oh, really? Have you so quickly forgotten the Traitorous Seven of Nuclear Option 'Agreement' fame? Use the media to stir up the people to join the rallying cry and you've got 'principled' senators and congresspersons who just HAVE to vote with their constituents in mind.

I'm not saying their efforts will actually work. :o)

i thought Sandy Burglar is getting a suspended sentence?

although there hasn't been a ruling, the judge has postponed sentencing, I think till September. Legal analysts I've heard say this means he's not going to accept the plea deal because it's way too lenient.

He's giving the lawyers a chance to go back and renegotiate, probably for jail time or names of higher ups to trade for the leniency. They say that's the only way to read a postponement of a plea agreement based sentencing. I hope Sandy Burglar goes for option B.

After Justice Department prosecutor Noel Hillman allowed Berger to plead guilty to a misdemeanor, he requested what some consider an extraordinarily light sentence given the gravity of the crime - a $10,000 fine, a three-year suspension of Berger's security clearance and no jail time.

The recommendation for leniency was in stark contrast with the comments of Deputy Attorney General James Comey, who suggested after the document theft story broke that Berger could be headed to jail.

"We take issues of classified information very, very seriously," Comey told reporters, before adding, "All felonies in the federal system bring with them the promise of jail time, that's all I can say about that."

Prosecutor Hillman's recommendation would still have to be approved by Magistrate Robinson, a prospect that is expected but not assured.

Under Justice Department guidelines, Berger's misdemeanor plea could still yield a $100,000 fine and a year in prison.

Since the announcement of Berger's light sentence, several online petitions have sprung up, urging Magistrate Robinson to impose a stiffer penalty.

It's not clear whether the delay in Berger's sentencing has anything to do with a reluctance on Robinson's part to accept Hillman's recommendation.

Peter Fenn???????? Fooey!

Fenn is a party line hack, dead zone 3rd stringer. Probably they couldn't find anyone else willing to wreck a reputation on something so far-fetched. Fenn is always willing, and obviously, doesn't mind making a fool of himself. EX:

http://web.ask.com/fr?u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.studentnews.cnn.com%2FTRANSCRIPTS%2F0409%2F27%2Fcf.01.html&s=a&bu=http%3A%2F%2Fweb.ask.com%2Fweb%3Fq%3DPeter%2BFenn%2Bpredicted%2BKerry%2Bwin%253F%26o%3D0%26page%3D1&q=Peter+Fenn+predicted+Kerry+win%3F&o=0&qt=0&ma=Kerry's%20key%20critique%20is%2C%20Bush%20has%20alienated%20the%20rest%20of%20the%20world.%20Why%20do%20people%20say%20this%3F%20PETER%20FENN%20...%20comes%2C%20John%20Kerry%20is%20going%20to%20win%20this...&mt=CNN.com%20-%20Transcripts&mb=

CNN Crossfire transcript , Sept 27, 2004
"CARLSON: Peter Fenn, thanks a lot for coming. I never start with polls. Not that interested. But these polls out, the CNN/"USA Today"/Gallup polls, are actually pretty interesting. Bush is leading overall among likely voters.

But here are two smaller polls I think are even more interesting. Bush is killing Kerry on terrorism, 62 percent to 36 percent. But here is the most interesting poll. And I actually don't understand this at all. Who would better handle relations with other countries? Kerry, 40 percent, Bush 56 percent. The key critique -- Kerry's key critique is, Bush has alienated the rest of the world. Why do people say this?

PETER FENN, DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST: Well, you have an incumbent president, first of all. So they automatically have an advantage there, Tucker.

But I'll tell you, I think that this mistake of the Bush campaign to put that foreign policy debate front and center first debate, that is going to come back to bite them, because I'll tell you, I think Kerry is going to come out there, come out very strong. This last week in Iraq and the situation -- even the Republicans in the Senate, even the secretary of state have said these things are going badly. All over the world, people are appalled at our Iraq policy.

(CROSSTALK)

CARLSON: But not here. And that's the interesting -- that's why you must have some level of cognitive dissonance here. Here, you believe that this is a reckless president who has hurt America by invading Iraq. And yet the majority, strong majority, of likely voters think he's doing a great job. How dumb are they?

FENN: Well, I don't think it's a question of our voters being dumb, because when the election comes, John Kerry is going to win this battle. "

No, I expect the media to move off this and back to the abuse story which they believe is a winner for them. Also, there may be more Abu Ghrabib pics coming out to rub in the American people's faces.

I believe this is why they are pushing for Gonzales. Not because they hope he is a moderate, but to give Fat-ass Teddy and his cohorts on the Judiciary, another chance to pound the "torture" drum some more

They've been after Bush for years.

They have failed each time they've gone after him.

What 'serious' actions would you propose we take that we haven't already done? Don't mistake ridicule as an effective weapon. That is in part reason for the jokes. Besides, it keeps blood pressure down.

They have nothing, they will have nothing, the Democrats & MSM were just shamed yet again and instead of hiding under the covers they will continue to ask to be spanked. This is a sign of desperation and I'm not about to treat them with the respect of a worthy adversary or pretend their multiple allegations have any basis in truth.

" ... By the time his tenure was up Hillary would have Alzheimer's"

If she actually had a brain, I'd say perhaps she's had it for quite awhile:

Alzheimer's Disease:a degenerative brain disease of unknown cause that is the most common form of dementia, that usually starts in late middle age or in old age as a memory loss for recent events spreading to memories for more distant events and progressing over the course of five to ten years to a profound intellectual decline characterized by dementia and personal helplessness, and that is marked histologically by the degeneration of brain neurons especially in the cerebral cortex and by the presence of neurofibrillary tangles and plaques containing beta-amyloid.

(with apologies to all that may be truly afflicted)
