I lied! It's raining!! Right now! YEA!!!
Houston area got a good rain today, not the scattered TStorms of late, nbut the down side of all that is that a low is forming in the area, which mean the high protecting Texas may be weakening .... opening the door for Emily.
Supposing a hurricane was going to hit in my area (see my tagline). How far inland would I have to go to be safe from the worst winds and flooding? (Flooding is my main concern.)
I've seen on tv how traffic is at a crawl during an evacuation, so if I left the day before expected landfall, would I get far enough away by the time it hit? Or is that waiting too long?
Would tent camping in the Sam Houston National Forest be a horrible idea? I don't know how windy it would be that far north of Houston. I don't know much about hurricanes, can you tell? :-)

Maybe 6 years ago a TS headed here. Can't remember the name. I was working nights but my boss made me stay the day because she was afraid I couldn't get back. I woke up that afternoon expecting a storm but the weather fine. I went out and all of Harlingen closed up including Walmart! It passed thru Kennedy County. I stayed over for nothing and wound up only getting paid for actual hours worked. I was really P/Oed. The "strip" or unpopulated Mexico the best scenerio. I just hope Emily doesn't decide to skirt the coast and visit all of us.
Local weather guys are saying high should start reinforcing self in the next few days.

You never know actually where those suckers are going in. If I remember correctly that was back in '99, went right in the King Ranch...all the TX coast had a real heads up on that one. Bret was a hurricane.
Was probably Bret then. All that stuck was going to Walmarts and seeing a closed , hand written sign. I guess since they are 24/7 they never needed one before:')
You are pretty far inland so your worry is high wind and heavy (very heavy) rain, I would think a nice tall hotel in the area would be fine, if you are going to leave the area, leave 48 hours before expected land fall. 24 hours the roads will be jammed with folks fleeing Galveston county and clear lake.
I was seven, too, during Carla, living north of ya'll in Houston (Bellaire). And it was bad enough there! But the worse part of it all for me was the fact that her name was my name, too. It gave the rest of my name new meaning too, though little could my parents have ever imagined anything like that ever happening. I only had to endure the good natured ribbing seven more years 'til we moved to New Orleans. No one had ever heard of hurricane Carla in NO. Just Betsy.

Question for you Houston guys. We were bringing a 5th wheel in to Hardin this weekend. Yall think that is far enough from the coast to be ok? Think I should wait? Hotels and eating out is just so expensive.

Just look at Texas and notice the small group of pretty colors right off the coast. That is where the computer models think Emily will be in 6 days.
Hard to FIND Texas.
It's right next to the tight round ball of pretty colors ;)
How do to tell what part of Texas though? It's covering the entire coast.
