Published: Jul 9, 2005 LONDON (AP) - British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Saturday it is crucial to address terrorism's underlying causes, which he identified as deprivation, lack of democracy and ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Thursday's bomb attacks on London demonstrate the pressing need for world leaders to tackle problems like poverty, he told British Broadcasting Corp. radio. He said leaders had taken on some of those issues at the G-8 summit of the world's wealthy nations in Scotland this week.
"I think this type of terrorism has very deep roots," Blair said. "As well as dealing with the consequences of this - trying to protect ourselves as much as any civil society can - you have to try to pull it up by its roots," he said.
That meant boosting understanding between people of difference religions, helping people in the Middle East see a path to democracy and easing the conflict between Israel and the Palestinians, he said.
"Ultimately what we now know, if we didn't before, is that where there is extremism, fanaticism or acute and appalling forms of poverty in one continent, the conseqences no longer stay fixed in that continent," Blair said.

The root cause of terrorism is Islam. If we are willing to tear this out, root and branch, we could solve the problem. The cure would be worse than the disease, however.
Since we can't really deal with the root cause, we just have to eliminate the terrorists where they are.

It is possible that Tony Blair just delivered a quick beheading of the far left's expected attempts to blame this on the liberation of Iraq. You will note that Blair just said there was not enough democracy and that they will have to see "the path to democracy." That isn't exactly appeasement and it certainly isn't turning away from the Bush Doctrine. He can say "see the path to democracy" and send special forces into Iran tomorrow as he should. He can say "see the path to democracy" and then have the editor of Al Quds in London suddenly get an offer that cannot be refused which results in that paper recognizing the Iraqi government and, of course, turning over all of its subscription database to MI5 and MI6 (if that hasn't already happened, no wonder the attacks happened).
