WHAT WAS Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. thinking when he attended a fund-raiser last month at the Elkridge Club, which has never had an African-American member? It turns out that he hasn't been bothered a bit - by the club's history or by criticism that he ignored it. Responses this week by Governor Ehrlich and by Lt. Gov. Michael S. Steele that the club's membership is not their concern are unacceptable. It's not enough for Mr. Ehrlich, a Republican, to point fingers and complain that Democrats have also used the club. We don't defend those Democrats either. But Mr. Ehrlich and Mr. Steele are the top two officers in the government of a richly diverse, progressive state. They are supposed to set the example.
Elkridge, Baltimore's oldest country club, has forfeited a state tax exemption for nearly 30 years rather than disclose its membership roster to demonstrate that it's not restrictive. But members and former officers have confirmed to The Sun that the club has never had a black member in its 127-year history. After Mr. Ehrlich's $1,000-a-head golf fund-raiser there on June 20, some African-American leaders raised strong objections.

Not only did Gov Ehrlich attend a fund-raiser that refuses to make public it's demographics but he also refuses to raise taxes or sign a special tax on Wal-Marts. How did a racially insensitive person like Ehrlich get elected to governor of such a 'richly diverse, progressive state' ??(obviously not with the endorsement from the Balt Sun.)
I hope his Lt Gov Steele (who is a black republican) runs for the US Senate in Maryland. That would kill these jerks at the Sun.
The Sun is desperate. They continue with these baseless attacks against Ehrlich. Of course The Sun doesn't care about the Democrats- why should they, it doesn't fit their agenda. The column this week by Olesker was particularly foolish, even by his standards.
I do like Lt. Gov. Steele.
Learn it, live it, love it.
And the Red Sun wonders why its readership plummets.
Steele is a good man. His reaction to this makes me like him even more. The Sun's reaction to Steele is "he's a black man, why doesn't he think exactly like we liberals do." Also, who the hell are these "black leaders"? I guess the usual clowns - the phony "reverends" and political activists. And The Sun would never call Steele a black leader.
progressive, screw you sun, it's called liberals, and they can go screw themselves.
And if you don't like it, go move to Iran, where the laws are more relaxed.
It's a Private club, and as long as it's private property, you can go scratch.
Mikey Olesker is jealous that Michael Moore is more famous than him. Olesker will do anything to get national attention.
Yes you do. You have defended them with your past silence.
The only disagreement I have with anything you wrote is that I consider this to be one of Olesker's more coherent columns. He is a flaming liberal a-hole and his columns are typical liberal drivel all the time.
Does anyone really care?
Driving while Republican.
Maybe this club is waiting for the congressional black caucus to admit one white person (or one black republican) before they open their membership.
I'm for free association and all that, but don't expect me not to laugh in your face when you try to tell me Republicans are somehow "color blind."
BTW, won't it be great if Bush is the first to appoint a Hispanic to the Supreme Court?
"WHAT WAS Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. thinking when he attended a fund-raiser last month at the Elkridge Club, which has never had an African-American member?"
He was likely thinking "This is REALLY gonna piss off some harebrained reporter at the Baltimore Sun!!"
What is this author thinking, being a citizen of a country that has never had an African-American president?
I remember Clinton playing at the Indian Head club in Miami, which does not allow Jewish members, the day before he made an appearance at the Aventura Jewish Center in 2001.
It's time to put some Steele into Maryland's backbone.
Man, that was terrible. Oh well. Steele rocks.
