There has been an explosion at Aldgate East underground station in London, causing the closure of the entire Tube network.
There are also reports that a second incident took place at Edgware Road station in north west London.
The Aldgate East blast was caused by "some kind of power surge", according to Tube infrastructure company Metronet, which is responsible for maintaining the Metropolitan line.
A spokesman said: "We don't know the extent of the problem yet."
A London Ambulance Service spokeswoman said: "We have just sent some resources out to the scene."
British Transport Police confirmed that there are "walking wounded" and said paramedics have responded to one report of a person classed as "life at risk".
"It's chaos, with people trying to work out what has happened," said a spokesman.
"All we know at the moment is that staff reported a loud bang at 8.49am. No one is sure what caused an explosion, but it is thought it could have been a collision, a power cut, or a power cable problem."
One witness said the packed underground train he was on was 200 metres from Kings Cross when there was a huge flash.
The train stopped and people were using umberellas to smash windows of the trains. Passengers were led out of the train by underground staff.
He added people were milling around Kings Cross covered in soot.
Honestly, it would not suprise me if it were a homocide bomber. I just always figured they would hit the US first.

I will always remember hubby's brother calling from California on the evening of 9/11, saying "I know you don't work anywhere near the Trade Center but I just had to hear your voice." There's enough terror to go around and I pray for everyone touched by this.
Of course, it wasn't a good day to be in the European markets; they all closed well down.
Sky News is reporting that the bus was probably blown up by a homicide bomber, but it has not yet been confirmed by Scotland Yard. They are more interested in trying to trace the particles of the explosives used, as if they were not homicide bombers then they are still at large and that is of major concern. A significant portion of the UK population, I've seen no recent polls but it's obviously a lot, will blame Iraq.
This is not good for Tony Blair, but I don't think it'll cause any immediate change in UK policy regarding Iraq.
It just would be interesting if the bus were a homicide bomber, and the tube bombs were detonated......
Remember the Kathlene(?) Harris/Tennessee Driver's license scandle? One of the people she issued phoney ID to had a contractor's work permit to 'fix' the sprinkler system at the base of the WTC, dated as few days before the attack.
The WTC doesn't contract out such work.
The smoke from the fires was jet black, not the lighter steam diluted color one would expect if water were actually making it to the flames.

As I awoke this morning early I turned to FreeRepublic to enjoy my cup of coffee with, the usual enjoyment was replaced with horror...
It took me just a few minutes to add the TV News to my morning routine and within a few minutes the level of what happened began sinking in. As it did the sobs and tears that I thought had been left back in the months following 9/11 came flooding back.
My prayers are with London.
Some call what I have a type of PTSD around events such as these...I call it anger, pure Godly anger.
Not only are the dems using the "terrorists are trained by us in Iraq" as the "talking points...
but, their big thing today is, that "see, if Bush had just stayed in Afghanistan and gone after Osama Bin Ladin, this wouldn't have happened.."
Of course, what they don't admit is, that at least 17 military people died this last week, BECAUSE we are trying to get Bin Ladin, who is at the Afghanistan/Pakistan border!!
Also, that Al-Zarqawi, that was in Afghanistan, is NOW in Iraq, by way of the camp in the north part of Iraq!!!
