GLENEAGLES, Scotland - President Bush has named former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson to help shepherd his yet-to-be named Supreme Court nominee through the Senate, White House spokesman Scott McClellan said Wednesday.
Thompson, a Republican and actor on the NBC television series "Law & Order," agreed to accept the post in a telephone conversation with the president on Monday, McClellan said.
He said Thompson would serve as an informal adviser to shepherd the nomination through the Senate.

Bush would not have already picked the shepherd if he did not have the sheep lined up. I would expect an announcement soon given this.
Eh, get it over, nominate Fred Thompson to the Supreme Court.
Hmmm . . . could be a trend? After all, Bush did pick Cheney to "oversee" his V.P. nominee selection back in 2000, right? LOL
Will the nominee be Jack McCoy?
Not a bad idea.
Thompson for President doesn't sound all that bad either.
Sounds good to me. His likability factor is very high.
Alexandra!
Son, the President don't take a dump without a plan.
Seriously? I didn't know that. Hmmmm....
Press Releases FRED THOMPSON: A TRUE TENNESSEAN
March 25th, 2002 - Just a few short weeks ago, I and Tennesseans alike, were jolted by the news that Tennessees own Fred Thompson would not seek reelection to the United States Senate. The interests of Tennesseans and our state have been well-served by Senator Thompson as they will throughout the rest of his term.
Senator Thompson and I came to the United States Senate together, having campaigned on traditional Tennessee values, restoring trust in government and making it smaller and more responsive to the taxpayer. Fred was an accomplished man well before he entered the Senate. He put himself through college while raising a family, served as an assistant U.S. attorney in Nashville, was tapped to be the lead Republican counsel to the Senate Watergate Committee, and headed a special counsel to investigate political corruption in Tennessee all while moonlighting as a first-rate actor. This impressive resume gave Fred a remarkable leg up on the skills necessary to be a great Senator a keen legal understanding and an ability to communicate like no one else both here in Washington and at home.
That's one of my favorite movie lines.
"The Russians don't take a dump son, without a five-year plan."

The Hunt for Red October
Bingo. Actually, this isn't a stretch at all.
"Bush would not have already picked the shepherd if he did not have the sheep lined up. I would expect an announcement soon given this."

I agree, and I am more and more convinced that all the hype and pontificating about it being Gonzales is some sort of smokescreen to keep the focus off the real nominee, so the special interest groups, MSM character assassins and talking heads won't have the change to mount vicious borking attacks prior to the president's announcement. Bush, Cheney and Rove didn't just fall off the turnip truck and they know what's at stake here, especially if the nominee turns out to be Janice Rogers Brown, the Dims' worst nightmare from almost any perspective.
Well, it wasn't a coach, it was either the university president or the athletic director in Unnecessary Roughness, the movie with Scott Bakula, Sinbad (and Kathy Ireland as the placekicker).
He also played the White House Chief of Staff in Clint Eastwood's movie "In the Line of Fire", and an airport chief in "Die Hard 2: Die Harder".
Better, Abby!
I think this is BRILLIANT!
Had to be Rove... LOL!
I stand humbly corrected
Thompson's a great character actor, though. I remember seeing him in an old "Matlock" episode.
