2008 presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton is blasting President Bush for lax enforcement of the nation's immigration laws, saying the White House has dropped the ball on border security and put the country at risk for another major terrorist attack.
In a statement posted to her newly revamped official Senate web site, Clinton charges: "The Bush administration is failing to meet what should be the basic requirements of immigration policy: continuing our American tradition of welcoming immigrants who follow the rules and are trying to build a better life for their families, while strengthening national security in a post 9-11 world."
In a potentially potent bid to win Red State support in 2008, the former first lady is playing the role of tough cop:
"Our current immigration laws need to be reformed," she urges. "We need a better solution to the question of illegal immigration which recognizes the conflict between the need to enforce the law, and the reality that too many employers are using undocumented workers today."
Clinton says that while "this administration has failed to provide the resources to protect our borders, or a better system to keep track of entrants to this country . . . I welcome the addition of more border security."
She pins blame for the failure directly on the Oval Office, saying, "President Bush refused to provide the necessary funding in his Fiscal Year 2006 proposed budget sufficient to hire all of the border patrol agents that had been authorized."
"Fortunately," Clinton adds, "during the Senates debate on the budget in March of 2005, we passed an amendment to provide increased funding for border patrol agents."
Then, in a none-too-subtle dig at GOP foot-dragging on the immigration issue, Clinton says: "I hope the Republican leadership will support the maintenance of this funding, to provide the resources necessary to properly protect our borders."
"You and I both know that Democrats, as a core belief of theirs, want our borders wide open."
Yes I know that. The sad truth to the matter is that the MAJORITY of Republicans mirror this position too.
That's the part that sucks. We would EXPECT the Dum-a-crats to go alond with this position...there are far too many conservatives among the ranks of Republicans...so for this reason, the majority of them are JUST as useless as Democrats.
Of all Senators, Republican and Democrat, the Senator with the single best record on securing the border and stopping illegal immigration is Robert Byrd (D-WV). No Republican Senator can even come close to matching his record. I despise Robert Byrd but he has a great record on this issue.
A few posters here have noted that Hillary voted for the Ag-Jobs Amnesty which is true. But as part of the same Iraq War Supplemental Funding Bill, she also along with all 44 other Democrat Senators voted unanimously for the Robert Byrd Amendment which added funds for 1000 new Border Patrol Agents, 500 new interior ICE Agents and 1900 new detention beds. Only 20 Republican Senators could bring themselves to vote for stronger borders while 34 voted against the Byrd Amendment.
Those who don't think the Democrats can't take the illegal immigration issue away from Republicans are crazy. Controlling illegal immigration is a strong fit with their labor union, african-American, and recent legal immigrant base. They will do anything to get back power and they needn't fear losing the Hispanic vote because most legal Hispanics are against illegal immigration and no Republican has a hope of out-pandering the Democrats when it comes to handouts, freebies and racial politics.
Hillary is getting advise from a master politician. She only needs to peel off a tiny number (60,000) votes in a labor state like Ohio to win.

And it's noteworthy that George Allen voted against the Byrd Amendment.

Basically we prefer to be called not sticking our heads in the sand crowd.
Talk is cheap..
Didn't her hubby promised us a tax for the middle class??
Protect our borders and coastlines from all foreign invaders!
Be Ever Vigilant!
Minutemen Patriots ~ Bump!
Hillary will tell you what you want to hear. Keep this b*tch out of the whitehouse and our government at any level. The same goes for her husband. They are evil.
Shut up and sit down.
Shrillery is taking a page from Slick Willie's book. Remember in 1992 when Bush 41 was not exactly the NRA's best friend? Billy Jeff immediately donned hunting clothes and grabbed a shotgun for some photo-ops, thus putting himself to the right of 41 on gun rights in the eyes of a lot of gun owners. Kerry tried the same trick in 2004, photo ops with guns to make it look like he was to the right of Bush 43 on the gun issue. In all his photos Kerry looked like he was such a doofus with a gun that his scam didn't work.
Shrillery is trying the same tactic with homeland security to make people think she's to the right of President Bush and the Republicans. Unfortunately, she may succeed. Mr. President, I think you're great, but PLEASE do something about our porous border with Mexico!
Richardson's lead foot was an issue very recently. Check http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&ned=us&q=richardson%2C+suv%2C+speeding
His zipper problem is more of a whispering thing, but it helped shoot his name down as a potential running mate for John Kerry last year. (He would have been a far more effective and substantial choice than Edwards IMHO, perhaps enough so to tip a swing state or two towards Kerry and with them the election... so I'm thankful he wasn't chosen.)
Haven't seen the goatee.
There's one other thing: Richardson is the guy at the UN to whom Monica Lewinsky was sent, IIRC by Vernon Jordan. As such, he is a reminder of the seedier side of the Clinton presidency, which might be a negative too. In a way it's too bad-- he's one of the more solid and credible DemocRats IMHO. He's no Zell Miller, and he's every bit a Gramscian global-socialism incrementalist like the Clintons, but he's no flyweight Edwards or unstable Dean either.
Domenici has been successful in getting new nuclear power plants through the Senate, so he can obviously work miracles.
See "The China Syndrome" with Jane Fonda, Michael Douglas, Jack Lemmon, Wilfred Brimley, 1979 for Senate Democrats' template, hence the "miracle worker" sobriquet for Pete.
What about a president that never puts 4 Puerto Rican terrorists in jail, in the first place, and gives those same terrorists everything they want?
Who's worse?
In spite of this cowardly terrorist attack, the Navy was forced to stop practice bombing a little 300 yard wide corner of the island of Vieques, 16 miles away from the nearest residents, with inert bombs.
In addition, Bush chose to give away the entire 11,000 acre Naval base at Roosevelt Roads to the ingrates on Puerto Rico, FREE, complete with infrastructure, instead of auctioning it off to the highest bidders and giving the proceeds of the sale to the U.S. Taxpayers as Congress had originally ordered.
The crooked politicians in Puerto Rico estimate they will collect $4.5 billion dollars in yearly fees from the U.S. Military, other federal agencies and private sector tenants for the use of:
-the airport with a 2-mile-long runway,
-the 1,400 buildings,
-the Hospital,
-the hotel,
-the water filtration plant,
-the golf course,
-the power generation plant,
-the jail,
-miles of roads,
-miles of electrical, water, sewer and communications infrastructure, etc.
-all fully fenced and ready to go at U.S. Taxpayer expense.
Even Clinton didn't have the nerve to pander to Puerto Rico like this at U.S. Taxpayer's expense.
I have traveled all over the world and have never entered a country that did not verify I was permitted.
What's wrong with us?
"What's wrong with us?"
Seems like we are heading for open borders as has been rumored here on a few threads.
He's a Queen too?? LOL.
And I thought Hillary wanted to allow illegals and convicts the right to vote.
Which is it, Miz Two face?
