Lord of the Epics (MahaBharata - the movie)

The Mahabharata. Hindu mythology's greatest epic might just become Bollywood's biggest ever cinematic venture. The magic of this powerful epic is currently being recreated by producer Bobby Bedi into a trilogy with a budget of Rs 300 crore.

"The trilogy will capture the battles, intrigues, spiritual complexity and cultural aesthetics of India, 4,000 years ago. This will be my big project for the next three years," says Bedi, adding that he discovered the power of the Mahabharata's storyline after reading Girish Karnad's script for Agnivarsha.

What will bring the superstar touch to the Mahabharata is the cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan (together on the screen for the first time) and Rani Mukherji.

"While Rani will play Draupadi, Shah Rukh and Aamir will play Karan and Arjun, but I can't reveal who's who. I hope to make a historic movie series in the manner of The Lord Of The Rings.

My Mahabharata will have the same imagination, special effects and creativity of Peter Jackson's trilogy.

In fact, we've asked The Lord Of The Rings' team to work with us on this project. Mani Ratnam will direct the trilogy, which will roll soon," says Bedi, the chairman of CII's entertainment committee.

Bedi plans to take India's most ancient story to Gen Now across the globe. "I want American, British, Japanese and Indian kids to watch the movie and understand the significance of the Mahabharata.

Wow!

And what a spectcle it will be!

To the uninitiated, here's a primer:

The Maha Bharata is by far the world's looooongest epic. Its longer than 20 of Homer's Iliads put together!

Written totally in verse, in ancient Sanskrit, its so expansive that the entire Hindu holy Epic of the Bhagvad Gita is part of just 1 chapter in this Magnum Opus

Bollywood, known to make half-decent movies now and then, may or maynot be able to do justice to this theme. I really wish some Hollywood deep pockets had taklen this movie on!

I recently bought the 1989 version that was on PBS. Fortunately I have some co-workers who filled me in on some things.

Even with that, I watched the first hour and then did some research on the 'net in order to understand what was going on.

Would something like this even be coherent to children? A story that's 20x the size of the Iliad seems outside the scope of almost anyone's ability to absorb, much less a child's. Especially if the story is subject matter has cultural undertones that the viewer is unfamiliar with.

If done with the same production value as LOTR it could be very interesting. However, without some backgroung it is very hard to follow.

Especially if the story is subject matter has cultural undertones that the viewer is unfamiliar with. Fair question, must admit. But tere's this difference between harry Potter and teh Lord of the Rings. The former is designed for children, the latter not really so. In fact, to simplify ('dumb-down?) the theme so much as to make it digestible to kindergarteners would be a colossal loss. In many ways, having read and loved both the Mahabharata and LOTR, I tend to think the latter is really an over- simplified variant of the former. The parallels are unmistakeble. The plot, analogies, stories, angels and demons, politics and powerplay, morality and ethics, vividness and greatness - indisputable.
