No takers for visiting French kids

July 3, 2005 -- Summer plans for dozens of French kids wanting to visit New York City are toast — the apparent victim of anti-French feelings here since the start of the Iraq war.

World Exchange, a nonprofit organization that coordinates a summer exchange, is scheduled to have 92 French students land in New York this week. But only 30 have a place to stay.

The organization can't find New Yorkers willing to take the rest.

Great episode. BTW Milla is Russian, not French.

I had a french lady in my store last week. She asked me if I had a certain item and I said no, we did not carry that item. Twice after that she asked me in a very accusing tone "Are you sure?"

What part of non did she not understand?

As I explained up thread, but she could carry an accent convincingly enough for Ron Leavitt and Michael Moye.

Jeez, but I'm a huge MWC geek. One of the best shows EVER.

BTW, don't know if you've ever caught the underrated and hilarious "Zoolander", in which Milla plays a bloodthirsty Tsarist fashionista named - get this - Katinka Ingabogovinanana. Hearing Will Ferrell (her equally homicidal prominent fashion designer boss) trail off on the last few syllables while introducing her is priceless. Milla says Katinka is based on her mother.

Two thumbs up . . . Xena sez check it out!

"I do not intend to offend you, but your phrase, "Our town and HS are very diverse,...", shows that you live somewhere where PC "values" hold sway."

Last year my oldest daughter & I went to Boston to look at BU & BC. I loved BC, and my daughter did too. We attended an open house for prosepctive freshmen and listened to the admissions representatives as well as about 9, really well spoken, bright students talk about the college. This group of 9 white, catholic kids touted their "diversity."

Our city in Westchester has 1 high school, about 3,100 students. We are very diverse. I don't mean that in any PC way, but only that economically, religiously, ethnically, racially our students come from all groups. There are many diplomatic residences in our city and we have lots of embassy kids too. We have illegal Mexicans and Irish and descendents of the french Huguenot settlers. A new Mormon temple is opening in a few weeks. Our city is mostly Catholic & Jewish (typical for NYC), but my son has a Quaker friend and one daughter has a Mormon friend, and one has a, get this, zoroastrian,(her mom is a surgeon at our local hospital). Our city is about 30% black, and 20% hispanic. Westchester was historically republican, but for the last 30 years has leaned more democratic and liberal (Hillary took our county).

My daughter loved many things about Boston College, but said she "had never seen so many white kids in one place." I had to laugh, but agreed. I've worked at a Catholic college for 24 years, and many things there resonated with me, but I knew that wasn't the place for her.

Diversity is not only a "PC" thing, but when you've been exposed to many different types of people you notice the lack of it. Our Swedish exchange students mentioned that over and over as one of the things that impressed them about their trip.

I believe I've heard the phrase "melting pot" way before "diversity", but they mean the same thing.

I regress, I should have chosen a better example to explain how citizens and politicians may not share the same ideology.

We had a Spanish student about 6 years ago & had nothing but trouble. Her sister was with a another family & she had taken a camera etc. from the home. All they wanted to do is walk the streets downtown. We live in a rural area so downtown was a mall. They were to stay here 4 weeks but the company sent the sisters back after 2 weeks. They thought they could just do what they wanted without any supervision but found out we didn't play their games.

"Ok, they're French, but they're just children. It might be a good time to impress upon their youth that America can be a wonderful country and the people aren't the monsters that Jockstrap has lead them to believe."

Well, if they or their parents have read this thread, I guess they'll have a rather strange idea of America or Americans...
