Employees Sue Company Over Secret Tapings (Videotaped While Using Restroom)
Yahoo! News ^ | 7/01/2005 | AP

MESA, Ariz. - Nearly 100 employees of a trash collecting company in Phoenix have filed a lawsuit, alleging that people were videotaped while using the restroom.

Waste Management lawyer Michael Manning said there was videorecording equipment in the men's restroom of the company's building but it was to catch vandals and drug users at night.

He said nobody ever watched the recordings unless there were signs of vandalism or drug use in the restroom first, which there were none after the equipment was installed.

Manning said the lawsuit is an attempt by union organizers to malign the national trash collection company, which is based in Houston.

The suit, filed June 21 in Maricopa County Superior Court on behalf of 92 employees, claims that Waste Management in Phoenix secretly taped people "in the act of urinating or undressing inside an employees restroom."

It names eight supervisors and managers who the employees say knew about the recordings.

I don't see a problem as long as it's posted that video equipment is in use

Being secretly taped is a big problem

Mixed feelings on this. Yeah, there needs to be a posting on suurveilance. The company is justified in protecting their assests but they need to go about it the right way.

Someone probably scribbled "Kerry Sux" on the wall.

It would seem to be common knowledge since the vandalism or drug use stopped.

They still should have posted a sign stating surveillance was in use

We live in a surveillance society as it is. I can be watched anywhere if I am outside my house. I have to draw the line at being watched in the @#$$ bathroom. I'm sorry. I'll vandalize the god damned equipment. Nobody needs a video of me performing private bodily functions. Not unless I'm getting paid good money for it.

The key word is secretly "claims that Waste Management in Phoenix secretly taped people "in the act of urinating or undressing inside an employees restroom."

Seems to me no posting warning the employees that one of their most private moments was being taped. No company should have the right to video tape a person in a state of undress or using the facilities.

I worked for a company from Hades a few years ago. I've described the place and the CEO, CFO on another thread entitled: "What was your worst/best job."

To continue: The whackjobs placed bugs in the offices so they could listen to conversations going on in the various rooms. The absolute best was the day the secretaries massacred the female CEO's outfit and ripped her appearance to shreds. We couldn't understand why she left and came back in a completely different outfit. Then, lots of things started making sense and one of the guys started looking and found one of the bugs.

Oh yeah. Brave New World and all the paranoia in it.

We could always upload it onto the web.

It'd give a whole new meaning to the phrase "streaming video." :)
