In a wide-ranging interview now wrapping up on Chris Matthews' Hardball show on MSNBC, Howard Dean described the murderous insurgents in Iraq as "fighting for their country." So outlandish was his statement that, probably realizing his folly, he quickly added, "don't get me wrong, I favor fighting against terrorists."
Matthews gave Dean incredibly respectful treatment. If Matthews had any criticism of Dean, it came from the left. He called Dean "a voice of reason" and demanded to know why Dean wasn't as critical of the war in Iraq as he was when he was a candidate for the Dem nomination.
Matthews was highly critical of other leading Dems - Kerry, Hillary, et al., who are not as willing as Dean to call the war a mistake or blunder.
Matthews has clearly gone over to the hard left. Niche marketing, or incipient dementia?
Matthews characterized it as Cheney having "gone after" Dean's mom.
Matthews misconstrues things constantly.
It's possible the "don't get me wrong" was a 'subliminable' statement by Dean, but the line about favoring fighting terrorists did come right after his line about the terrorists in Iraq "fighting for their country," and IMHO was intended to cover his gaffe.
Well said. In no way was Cheney "going after" Dean's mother. To the contrary, if anything, he was lauding the unconditional love that mothers are known for. I don't think Matthews misconstrued Cheney. IMHO, he intentionally distorted his remarks for political purposes.
Dean is right, terrorists from Saudi, Jordan and Syria are fighting for their beloved country of Iraq and the millions of Iraqis who voted for democracy never existed.
Dean and the Democrats are an embarassment, just more Monday-morning quarterbacking, they criticizes or passes judgment from a position of hindsight. The Democratic party has been capture by leftists, who can't fight their way out of a wet paper bag. Matthews is just as bad.
He was a speechwriter for Jimmy Carter and then aide to Tip O'Neil
Margret Carlson is the female equivilant of Howard Dean...
Chrissy totally "leads" his guests to how HE wants them to answer.
His first question to Howard was "aren't you upset that the Dem leadership, Clinton, Biden, Kerry,, havne't come out and more forcefully argued that this war in Iraq should never have been fought"...(paraphrased)....
Weasley Clark is on O'Reilly right now....
another Howard Dean.....
He worked for Carter, I don't know about any Gebhardt connection.
I think he worked for Tip O'Neil (Hope I spelled that correctly):-)
And her ideological twin Eleanor Clift!
I don't know if anyone has posted this yet, but this morning on Rush Limbaugh, he addressed that very comment and a one of the enlisted soldiers that was at the speech said that the military didn't applaud because GW Bush is their Commander in Chief and it is out of respect for him that they withhold their applause. He also said they are behind President Bush. The libs are so ignorant.
True, but in this case Margaret Carlson knew what the reason was for the withheld applause. She just chose to lie about it.
Memo to Howard Dean: Most of the thugs fighting against us in Iraq are NOT Iraqis. They are foreigners.
Once again, Dr. Demento showers gifts upon us! Hey Howie, which tastes better, Stacey-Adams or Florsheim?
no,no keep him talking! (if a duplicate please forgive)
Matthews has a conspiratorial mindset about Cheney, from my observation. He is ALWAYS seeking an interpretation of events that has Cheney being the manipulator of Bush behind the scenes. Or has Cheney being ultimately responsible for anything the Libs don't like, or the Libs make up, about the Administration. He has Cheney on the brain disease. So he probably thinks there is some kind of secret plan for Cheney to become Bush's heir, despite all denials and evidence to the contrary.
Ugh!
From what I saw tonight, you are absolutely right.
One could see the chemistry between the Bush and soldiers at the end when W plunged into the crowd and shook hands, stood for the pictures and thanked the military for their service. You could see the respect and admiration on the faces of soldiers, for the Commander. (Not like what Hitlery got :-)))
