White House covered up immigration study?

Federal survey showed Bush 'amnesty' plan encouraged illegals to enter

Rep. Tom Tancredo, R-Colo., the most outspoken member of Congress on the issue of illegal immigration, wants an investigation into why a study of aliens crossing the border was discontinued by the Bush administration after initial results indicated the president's proposed "temporary worker proposal" plan encourages illegals to enter the U.S.

Tancredo and watchdog legal group Judicial Watch released previously undisclosed documents relating to the Border Patrol's 2004 survey. The survey asked illegal aliens whether they had heard of a U.S. government amnesty plan for illegal aliens (61 percent had) and whether the amnesty plan influenced their decision to cross the border (45 percent answered that it did).

particularly when the majority say the plan would not encourage them to go to the U.S.

Cut the hysterics. Bush is not God and he is dead wrong on immigration. Heck, he had to sign an appropriation giving millions to Arizona to cover the emergency room health care costs incurred by the hospitals forced to take care of these interlopers. That's your money lady.

just because you disagree with him on one issue doesn't make him a RINO.

"supporting the traditional "r"epublican philosophy"

So you want to define a Republican as anyone who agrees with you and then say that anyone who disagrees with you is a RINO.

You want to know what traditional Republican beliefs are:
1. Oppose admission of Red China to the U.N.
2. Oppose giving away the Panama canal.
3. Return to the Gold Standard.
4. Oppose forced busing.
5. Oppose fluoridation of water.

The Republican Party changes continuously. If you disagree with the National Platform and the consensus positions of the leadership it is you, who is a RINO, not the rest of the Republicans.

So? Why does that make you feel uncomfortable? Visit Houston sometime. There is one area where the street signs are in Vietnamese, areas where most of the signs are are in letters I can't decipher, areas where most of the signs are in Spanish. So what? It doesn't hurt me. It doesn't make me feel insecure. It doesn't threaten me. I welcome the new experiences. I like trying new foods, learning new things, talking to people who aren't identical to me and listening to different bands. It's my choice to mingle with different people or to stick with my own kind. I like having the options.

How can you type with your head so firmly buried in a dark place?

Multi-culturism of the type that you find cute will lead to balkanization of our society on nearly every level, starting with the schools our kids attend. Look at the Quebec model to see what you are inviting for us.

What made America strong through waves of immigration was the acquisition by each new group of American culture and values. These new groups resist that and guys like you encourage them to remain separate so you can enjoy a different meal every once in a while.

"Multi-culturism of the type that you find cute will lead to balkanization of our society on nearly every level,"

Bull!

It's called freedom. Do you want to use the police powers to force everyone to be exactly like you? Would you feel more secure if everyone was forced to wear the same style clothes as you? Eat the same foods? Listen to the same music? Attend the same church?

Pizza is Italian, hot dogs are German, tacos are Mexican, egg rolls are Chinese, and bagels are Jewish. How does it hurt you for all to co-exist in America?

Multi-culturism is not American. At least not the America of history. You talk about ethnic food as if that's all there is to it when the question raised was about maintaining cultural walls, which you support. America has achieved greatness and survived because people came here to be Americans not to use America but stay outside of it.

What you like is diversity, so what? We all do. What you support is multi-culturism, which is different and destructive to any nation's identity and cohesion, both of which are necessary for survival.

Again, I direct you to Quebec, the North American hub of that which you advocate. Or to the effects of multi-cultural separation in Western Europe. They opened the doors to the muslim poor of North Africa, Turkey and the ME but made it advantageous to the new comers to remain separate. Think they regret it? The new French/British/Dutch/Swedes are destroying those countries in large part exactly because they were never encouraged to become part of the existing culture.

Anyone who advocates that here is a dunce or a dupe or just dangerous.

"Multi-culturism is not American. At least not the America of history. "

What are you talking about? We have always had multiple cultures in America. There has never been a problem as long as the government doesn't try to force one culture on someone against his will.

The area I live in is 40% Hispanic and everyone gets along fine because everyone leaves everyone else alone to observe whichever cultural practices they want and no one tries to force anyone else to conform to their cultural preferences.

This is America, Saudi Arabia.

I LIVE in Houston. It doesn't make me uncomfortable, it makes me PISSED OFF! When my grandparents came to this country, they made their children speak English all the time because they knew that's how they would become successful.
This is not about going to Epcot and walking through the various countries as a "cultural experience" this is destroying OUR American culture. I honor my Polish and Italian heritage, but I don't expect signs to be in Polish because I won't learn English and won't assimilate into American culture.

Every study that I have seen (and there have been several posted on FR) show that Hispanics are learning English as fast as any past immigrant group.

Houston will always be an international city but no one is forcing you to participate in any international events, not even the rodeo which is an Hispanic cultural event or the bar-b-que cook-off, also of Hispanic origin.

Oh yeah? Try and order a friggin' hamburger in East Austin at a Burger King. My Ukranian Grandmother had a better grasp of English and she had about a 300 word vocabulary. Of course, she could cuss up a blue streak in Russian, but that is beside the point.

You have got to be kidding me! I'm sure it will come as news to all those Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo organziers. Just because "rodeo" is Spanish doesn't mean that the HLSR is a "Hispanic Cultural Event". Following your line of thinking, flushing my toilet is a "Roman Cultural Event" since they basically invented plumbing.

security perimeter around North America and making some sort of EU thing out of the US, Mexico, and Canada.

Who would pay for such a perimeter?

So you want to define a Republican as anyone who agrees with you and then say that anyone who disagrees with you is a RINO.

There has been a definable republican philosophy long before either you, or I, were born. That is where the "Republican" Party got it's name.

You are confusing basic principles with stances on specific
issues, which are derived from such principles. Of course
specific issues will change, that does not mean basic principles change. The idea that republican principles are whatever the Republican leadership says they are, is quite similar to the liberal notion that the constitution
is whatever the judges say it says.

As far as the GOP Platform, I only have one real problem with it. The section on education is more representative of Democratic thinking. Until the 2000 election, the GOP Platform called for abolishing the Department of Education and considered education to be a local, rather than a federal, issue. It was the Bush Campaign people who insisted on the change.

In areas where I agree with the platform, I see violations of the stated principles on the part of high level GOP officials. The President included. The platform calls limiting the growth of government and spending restraint. Do not even get me started on how badly this plank has been violated. (This issue is the area of the current GOP's biggest failure and is the cornerstone of republican philosophy)

The platform calls for an ownership society and respect for the constitutional right to private property. Not only did the administration not join in support of the land owners in the recent Connecticut SC case, it was reportedly leaning toward coming down on the other side before the WSJ and various property rights groups put the pressure on.

The failure to address the illegal immigration issue is arguably a violation of the party's security against terrorism plank.

Too many give President Bush and the current leadership a pass because, in comparison to the Dems, they seem to be doing a good job. I do not think that we should set the bar so low in evaluating our leaders.

There is a difference between having multiple ethnic groups and having a multiple culture. Our motto "E Pluribus Unum" refers to the creation of one culture out of multiple ethnic groups. Our culture respects the diversity that the various ethnic groups bring to it, but we are still supposed to have one culture.
