Cornyn to Minutemen: Back Off (Asks for time to allow the federal government to act.)
WOAI ^

Posted on 06/27/2005 4:05:07 PM PDT by Happy2BMe

U.S. Senator John Cornyn (R-Texas) today urged the civilian "Minuteman" border patrol organization not to begin operation along the Texas-Mexico border in October as planned, expressing concern that the group's activities could do more harm than good.

"I would hope that everybody who is concerned about the porous nature of our borders would allow the federal government to act," Cornyn told 1200 WOAI news this morning.

The Minuteman action "may actually not help solve the problem but may create a new and additional problem," Cornyn said.

"So my preference would be to let the federal government do the job the federal government is supposed to do."

Cornyn said he is preparing to introduce a comprehensive immigration control measure along with Senator John Kyl (R-Arizona) next month. He said he hopes many of the measure included in that bill will address the concerns the Minutemen have been raising.

He said a budget measure set to be discussed this week is designed to take Homeland Security funding from other projects and move that money to boost security along the Texas-Mexico border.

"With our enemies exploiting our vulnerability to a porous border, it is important that we move on this issue."

Cornyn stressed that his proposal, which is expected to reach President Bush's desk by the end of the year, will not include an amnesty for people already in this country illegally.

"We need to deal with employer verification and employer responsibility. We need to give them the tools to determine whether an employee is legal to work in the United States. We need additional money for Border Patrol agents, and a new commitment to technology. But we also need to have a 'common sense and realistic' temporary worker program, which allows them to come into the U.S. and work legally, but then requires that they return to their home countries with the skills they learned and the money they earned in the United States," Cornyn said.

Cornyn said repeatedly that he feels the Minutemen have brought attention to problems along the border, and he understands their frustration with a lack of border controls. But he doesn't think putting untrained civilians along the increasingly dangerous border is the right way to handle the problem.

"What I worry about is if civilians step in, there will be an unexpected conflict, there will be some incident where somebody could get hurt."

He cited the danger posed by drug traffickers, traffickers in illegal immigrants, and violent syndicates like the MS-13 organization.

The Arizona based Minutemen group announced plans last week for four chapter in Texas to begin patrolling the Texas-Mexico border in October, possibly as part of a larger effort to string civilian patrols from San Diego in the west to Brownsville in the east.

But since then, groups have emerged in San Antonio, Corpus Christi, and elsewhere dedicated to opposing the Minutemen's efforts, causing the issue to become politically charged.

You've got until Oct. 1st Sen. Cornyn. Make your time count. The illegals coming here don't take a summer hiatus. This issue is so important that you might want to re-arrange any vacation plans as well.

"will inevitably lead to conflict. and media attention. that's the last thing we need."

You cannot win a fight by running from it.

Screw Cornyn and the activists he rode in on.

Montag to Cornyn: Maybe you can wait, but some Americans actually give a damn about whether terrorists are crossing the border TODAY, not 2 years from now, when you prima donnas in DC finally get your act together. So please STFU and let these patriots do their job...which is the job you schmucks are SUPPOSED to be doing, but are not.

Those in government have lost all touch.

Statements like this is like throwing gas on a fire.

If the federal government was doing it's job there would be no need for th minutemen.

Back OFF? We've been quiet since the Carter Administration and now that we're hollering you're finally starting to listen. Sounds like the time to holler a little more until the Feds actually do something and mean it.

We are going to fly little remote controlled airplanes to watch the illegals cross where we have no agents to arrest them. And then, we are going to enact laws and legislation that will provide funding for agents needed in those areas. Time frame? Oh, around six years. Don't want to friggin' rush things ya know!

What a joke, the borders should have been closed the day after 9/11 with the military if necessary, does Cornyn really believe in the next few months we'll get control of them? Maybe if there's political will or a desire to do so but I don't see it.

el wrongo, senor!

the last thing we need is conflict between activist protestors and the minutemen.

the republican party is trying to recruit mexicans into its ranks. elevating the conflict to the tv news at din din will polarize the issue--a marxist tactic. we can't win a tv war, when tv is mostly controlled by the left. look at the durbin-rove issue; durbin hasn't been reported by cbs news.

"I would hope that everybody who is concerned about the porous nature of our borders would allow the federal government to act,"

Now that is priceless.

What's the matter, embarrassed by your own governments lack of action?

Or perhaps you are embarrassed by your own governments attempt to squash the fact that the Militia Men really did make a difference in AZ?

Disgusting.

"...the republican party is trying to recruit mexicans into its ranks."

You mean the Big Tent GOP is looking for more RINOs/Liberals/Moderates, and since conservatives are abandoning ship at an increasing rate, have chosen hispandering as the way to go.

Sorry, I'm not buying.

I hope the Minutemen give this Senator exactly what he asks for: time for the FedGov to get its thumb out and do its job... I hope they give time amounting to, at the time of this writing, exactly three months and three days.

You said it my friend, the dems are communist pigs and there is not a single spine in any republican. It is only a matter of time before our "elected representatives" destroy the country, and at this point I no longer have any faith in any politician so if the country goes down the toilet we will have only our own inaction to blame.

i lived thru' the l.a. riots,

and prop 187.

both were distorted by tv.

high school students all over the southland were given class time off to protest 187. this meant marches with mexican flags, large banners, all covered by the media.

in san diego county, the mexican students burned an american flag. a white guy ran to save the flag, and he was beaten by a large group of mexicans while the san diego sheriffs watched.

Cornyn's is a most vicious insidious accusatorial evil selfish statement if I ever heard one.

Minutemen denounce the power grab by the illegals and their various direct and indirect lobbies and the minutemen who denounce the folly of power struggle incitation are branded as warmongers and powerstrugglers by a very evil Senator who obviously selfishly enjoys power while the rest eats crap.

The minuitemen never stopped govenment power nor undermined it, they are more mature than these nitwitted darkness walking evil wolf in lamb's clothing RINOs who evily would kill for being criticized in being influenced or mislead by the hand of greed, stupidity and foolish power struggle manipulation.
