Lack of hero leaves liberals languishing

Copyright © 2005 Blethen Maine Newspapers Inc. E-mail this story to a friend Move to Augusta correct

"When America was on its knees, he brought us to our feet." So goes the buzz line for Ron Howard's "Cinderella Man," a summer hit describing the 1935 bravura victory of New Jersey's "Irish" Jimmy Braddock over Max Baer.

What I want to know now, Mr. and Mrs. Democratic America, is where our "Cinderella Man or Woman" is when we need him or her.

The Democratic Party is truly on its knees. Who will be our Jimmy Braddock and bring us to our feet?

These are sad, dark days. Even people who truly like us are getting ready to take out the going-to-the-wake blue suit.

Even clear, liberal comics who are on our side, such as Jon Stewart and Bill Maher, are making fun of us.

They're saying the Democratic Party has no plan, no vision and, at this date, no credible candidate who can go up against the Rove Machine. I agree.

If Bush succeeds in loading the Supreme Court with Clarence Thomas clones, the prospect of seeing Democrats actually -- not metaphorically, you understand, but physically -- thrown to the lions in Madison Square Garden is next.

We can point with pride to Gov. John Baldacci and Reps. Tom Allen and Mike Michaud, but unfortunately, as Maine goes, so does not go the nation.

Yes, we're only months away from becoming a chain gang. If we lose in 2006 and 2008, expect to see Democrats from every state working on the weed gangs along the highways from Alabama to North Dakota, shamed and humbled, dressed in orange jump suits with a big, white "DEMO" on the back.

We're going to be like Marlon Brando in the back of that cab, whining, "We could have been a contender."

The only magazines that will put us on the cover will be Arthritis Today and the J. Jill catalogue.

Even now, in Washington's better restaurants, neo-cons are getting the better tables.

And who is our "Cinderella Man" to be? Yes, Hillary is currently leading the pack, but she is a 1,000-foot lightning rod. Already Richard Mellon Scaife, the Darth Vader of the dark right, is lining up his forces to destroy her.

There is a book, a hatchet job, already on the stands with the "real secrets" of Hillary. Should she run, the Swift Boat Veterans Against Hillary would be running 24/7 commercials denying that she ever served in Vietnam and doesn't deserve the medals she doesn't have.

She can beat the wimpy George Allen of Virginia and Bill Frist, but John McCain? As the rumors of summer grow, who is out there who is our golden boy, our "Cinderella Man," who can lead us out of the desert, cutting short the 40 years of dry matzohs with cheap sauterne?

I can tell you that Howard Dean ain't our Moses. Even the hard-core base veterans blanched and quivered with gritted teeth when Dean recited his litany of stupid remarks. With honorable Jewish senators such as Arlen Specter, R-Pa., Eric Cantor of Virginia, and even the pathetic Norm Coleman of Minnesota, the "mostly white Christian" slug fell flat.

And most embarrassing was "... they never worked a day in their lives." Frist may be the anti-Christ, but in order to be a medical doctor, the man had to put in some long, tough, hard years to get where he is. And let's not forget Tom Delay, who started as a bug exterminator in Texas. Yes, he is Satan incarnate, but crawling under trailers in Sugar Land, Texas, qualifies as hard work.

It's getting late in liberal land. Do you know where our "Cinderella" is?

First, they'll have to accept that the ideas they used to have don't work.

If they start throwing liberals to lions in MSG, can I get tickets?

Also, I'd hope they have vets on hand to inoculate the lions against the diseases liberals carry.

It took the Soviets 70 years to figure that out.

Well, first he says that the Democrats must fight and attack.

Then he says the attacks are stupid and make the Dems look like idiots.

I would say he's right on both counts.

Yeah, I'd like to see a lion trying to swallow Fat Teddy. I'd buy ringside tickets for that one.

It's getting harder for the liberals to claim Stewart as one of their own when he concedes on The Daily Show that Bush's policies in the Middle East might actually be working and that congressional democrats are totally impotent and worthy of scorn.

FWIW, I like Jon Stewart.

First, they'll have to accept that the ideas they used to have don't work.

And that will be when hell freezes over. The only way Democrats EVER win is when they convince everyone EVERYTHING in their lives are horrible. They are the party of gloom and doom, and the slicers & dicers.

Democrats are experts at using class warfare, race baiting and when it suits them, bleeding hearts. There is nothing they will not do for power, which is very evident in their 'blame the military & victimize the terrorist' campaign.

If we don't beat these suckers all day long and into the next century, it's our own damned fault.

One of my favorite stories about Mark Twain is how his wife attempted to cure his habit of cussing like a sailor...

As the story goes, she decided that letting him hear exactly what he sounded like when he swore would fix the problem, so one day she let out a string swear words- the vilest ones in his vocabulary- a mile long, and when she had finished, he just looked at her for a while, and then said,

"My Dear, you have the words, but you just don't have the music."

This writer sort-of gets it, then strays afield when he starts defining things in terms of stuff he saw in the movies and media, and that their problem is "the Rove Machine."

Movies are make-believe ( even those based on true stories ) where everything is choreographed, and "the Machine" is not their real problem-- the problem is, when the average voter really sees what the Dems, and the Left, want for ( from ) them, they want no part of it.

The answer is simple, J.P. They were sacrificed by your political party on the alter of abortion in the last half of the 20th century.

I'd get seats a little further back; when the lion grabs the Impromptu Submariner, the blood is likely to squirt/spray for quite a distance. Or is that alcohol? I can't decide.

You've got a good point -- maybe best if Teddy were put in a tank with a bunch of barracuda, both to highlight his nautical background and to save the audience from getting splattered. We could use Dean with the lions. He's smaller and thinner and there would be less collateral damage for the spectators. Oh man, this would be the show of shows.

But...but...they tell me Jon Stewart is a moderate?!

You've identified the dem's biggest problem. They've become the party of liars. They lie to us, to themselves and to the fools who still vote for them.

The MSM lies for them, lies about them, and covers their lies when bloggers expose them. And still they wonder, "why doesn't anyone trust us?"

What a hoot!
