Billie

A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day
Free Republic made its debut in September, 1996, and the forum was added in early 1997.   Over 100,000 people have registered for posting privileges on Free Republic, and the forum is read daily by tens of thousands of concerned citizens and patriots from all around the country and the world.
A Few of FR's Finest....Every Day was introduced on June 24, 2002. It's only a small room in JimRob's house where we can get to know one another a little better; salute and support our military and our leaders; pray for those in need; and congratulate those deserving. We strive to keep our threads entertaining, fun, and pleasing to look at, and often have guest writers contribute an essay or a profile of another FReeper.
On Mondays please visit us to see photos of A FEW OF FR'S VETERANS AND ACTIVE MILITARY
If you have a suggestion, or an idea, or if there's a FReeper you would like to see featured, please drop one of us a note in FR mail.
We're having fun and hope you are!

Welcome to TGIF at the Finest!   We hope you've been having as much fun as we have with our essays and/or spotlight on various FReepers. From the beginning, we've been kicking back on Saturdays and Sundays and simply reviewing the features of the week; our weekend threads now start on Friday and continue through Sunday. If you missed seeing any of this week's threads and want to say hello there now, just click on the link for that particular day. If you'd like to drop in and out of this thread today through Sunday, please feel free to do that also. One of us will try to be around to see the welcome mat is still out, put the coffee pot on, and maybe even bring fresh flowers for the table. : )

"Wear Red" Friday
You will soon see a lot of people wearing Red on Fridays. Here's why..... The Americans, who support our troops, are the silent majority. We are not "organized" to reflect who we are, or to reflect what our opinions are. Many Americans, like yourself, and all their friends, simply want to recognize that Americans support our troops. Our idea of showing our solidarity and support for our troops is starting Friday and continuing on each and every Friday, until this is over, that every red-blooded American who supports our young men and women, WEAR SOMETHING RED.

Word of mouth, press, TV -- let's see if we can make the United States, on any given Friday, a sea of red much like a home football game at a University. If every one of our memberships share this with other acquaintances, fellow workers, friends, and neighbors, I guarantee that it will not be long before the USA will be covered in RED - and make our troops know there are many people thinking of their well-being. You will feel better all day Friday when you wear Red! So let's get the word out and lead by example; wear RED on Fridays.

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS! WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE. FOR US, THEIR BLOOD RUNS RED!! GOD BLESS AMERICA.
I received this in my email June 10th, the author is unknown.
I am wearing red today and every Friday ~ Billie

Bevlar sent this to me a few weeks ago.. been meaning to post, but keep forgetting. State-by-state scores on driving test

"The state of Rhode Island leads the nation in driver cluelessness, according to the survey. The average test score there was 77, just eight points above a failing grade.

Those in neighboring Massachusetts were second worst and New Jersey, third worst."

YIKES! That's scary! On the other hand, it could be like the political polls. Could be that they wanted it to look bad and threw out the 'smart' drivers answers. :)

How sweet! I'm always thrilled to see a pretty bird around here - we have so many sparrows and mockingbirds and scissortails, it's a treat to see a colorful one!

Hi all....I wish my flowers grew as fast as my weeds do :-)

"Catching up on front yard flower beds chores this morning, I captured several volunteer zinnia plants that had strayed to odd places, and tidied the border grasses -- and then placed the sprinkler to water same."

Wonderful, Maggie...happy you are out there enjoying the great outdoors :-)

Great scuba diving pic, DiverDave...LOL

Excuse_My_Bellicosity, as always..awesome photos, thank you.

P.S. Anyone planning on freeping in New London, Ct. ...sounds like a good idea to me

"P.S. Anyone planning on freeping in New London, Ct. ...sounds like a good idea to me"

Hearing New London involved in this got my attention.

My sister, Anne, lived there 15 years in a house right on the water, plus owning the beach down to it.
Her husband died of cancer in 1993, however, and in 1994 she moved back to her house in South Carolina on Lake Marion.
Glad it can no longer affect her.

Hi Maggie, how is Anne doing, prayers for your dear sister and all of you. My brother lives close to New London. Have taken the ferry out of Orient to New London many, many times. Usually drive around these days.

Wow, a house right on the water, must have been lovely

Anne is adjusting gradually to living in the Assisted Care Facility as best she can, calling me now and then to let out her frustration and sadness - "I can never go back to my lake house.."

Highlights "you can't take it with you," enjoying considerable wealth from inheritances and wise investments.
Now 80, she outlived 4 husbands.

The New London one was the retired (and widowed) publisher of The New London Day newspaper, and they met on one of the tours she took - the Eidelweiss one, to Switzerland. He courted her long distance, and had lived in that house many, many years.

Now she has a house full of valuable "collectibles" and all manner of old and lovely things - plus 3 storage units full of them, even after dispersing many things to her 4 children.

She is a very talented artist and loves good music of all kinds...now confined to an 'apartment' with bath and kitchen and sleep/living area...a luxurious one, but that is her *entire* world now....no more driving hither and yon whenever the urge hits...shopping, eating out, travel...

We had numerous glorious trips to our old (and some new ones!) Florida haunts together up until 4 years ago...
We plan to go to see her in July, now that my Nephrologist Thursday cleared that for me.

Thank you for asking, Colleen, and especially for the prayers...

Where and when will your Annual Family Gathering of The Clan be *this* year?!!

Word Watch

Read:
James 3:1-12

Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not to be so. —James 3:10

Bible In One Year: 2 Kings 11:1-14:20

cover Good grammar matters to me. As a writer and former English teacher, I'm bothered when I hear the wrong word used by people I think should know better. For instance, using "I" instead of "me" or "who" instead of "whom." There's a proper way to use the language, and it makes me cringe when the standard is violated.

There's another kind of incorrect word usage that is far worse. It happens when Christians utter words that fall short of the standard God expects. Whenever we use words that are considered crude, profane, or obscene, we violate God's clear standards.

Anytime we speak any form of God's name irreverently or in a way that doesn't honor Him, we displease Him (Exodus 20:7). If we joke about sinful practices, we are speaking in a way we shouldn't (Ephesians 5:12). Or if we participate in coarse talk (5:4), we bring dishonor to the name of Christ.

James said, "Out of the same mouth proceed blessing and cursing. . . . These things ought not to be so" (James 3:10). Such speech is hypocritical.

Controlling our tongue is difficult because it is an "unruly evil" (v.8). For the glory of God, and with respect for His standards, let's watch our words. —Dave Branon

A wise old owl sat on an oak;
The more he saw, the less he spoke;
The less he spoke, the more he heard—
Why aren't we like that wise old bird? —Richards

Every time you speak, your mind is on parade.

When a bunch of fellows from Boston held a big party with tea,
That's where your cradle was started and they called it Liberty.
At Bunker Hill could be heard among the hues and the cries, "Steady men don't fire, until you see the whites of their eyes."
So when those fellows got together again to draw up and sign a form,
They called it a Declaration and that's how you were born. The road has been bumpy and at times you've had to fight So that your sons and daughters can share their God given right.
You've held out your hand to the poor, given aid to the aged and sick,
Yet you walk softly while carrying a big stick.
Those stalwarts at Valley Forge suffered hardship and privation, So men could be Free to live in this mighty Nation. When this Great Land by strife was torn, where brother fought against brother,
It mattered little on which side they died, you extended your hand to one another.
Those that charged up that hill at San Juan to everlasting Glory and Fame,
Were spurred on by that fervent cry, '"Remember the battleship Maine."
When you summon your children they come from city and R. F. D.
To stand shoulder to shoulder in the fight against tyranny.
They have fought in the colds of Ancient Lands and in steamy jungles' heat,
So that the World will know that Free men cannot be beat. When old friends beckoned, you sent your children 'Over There'
Where they carried Freedom's ideals, into the enemy's lair.
That Star Spangled Banner atop Suribachi did wave, Put there by men from the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave.
There have been others like Chosin, Khe Sahn and Desert Storm, Where Brave men sailed forth whenever Freedom's ideals needed to be reborn.
When friends have asked, "Can you help?" and you say, "I can," I'm that Red, White and Blue, top hat man, you call "Uncle Sam." So today its Happy Birthday to you, a cause for great celebration, That began way back when those fellows got together,
and signed that Declaration
