Indonesia: The first public flogging for violation of Shari’a takes place tomorrow

Banda Aceh (AsiaNews/Agenzie) – The first public flogging in Indonesia is set to take place tomorrow, Friday 24 June, 160km from Aceh’s provincial capital Banda Aceh. Official provincial government sources said twenty-six people will be flogged; they have been found guilty of violating the Islamic Shari’a law.

The 26 people, who were convicted of fraud, will be lashed with a reed before the main mosque of the area. “The lashes should not produce bleeding wounds,” said Mustafa Abdullah Geulanggang, head of Bireuen district. “Should blood start to flow, the flogging must stop.”

Fr Ferdinand Severi, parish priest of the Sacred Heat of Jesus Church is the only Catholic priest in the province. He said: “We respect the creed of other religious but in a spirit of reciprocal respect, the use of flogging should not be used for Christians.”

In 2001, Jakarta authorized the province of Aceh – a Muslim “stronghold” – to enforce Shari’a law. Since 2003, an Islamic tribunal has been in place. According to Islamic law, flogging may be used to punish crimes like fraud, adultery, use of alcohol, gambling and “intimacy between a man and woman who are not married”.

The Indonesian archipelago has more than 205 million inhabitants of which 87.2% adhere to the Islamic religion. As a rule, Indonesian Islam is quite moderate: Shari’a is applied only in Aceh province. However, recent years have seen an increase in fundamentalism thanks to the influence of Pakistani and Afghan preachers.

Some freepers would be all for this.

Wasn't there a big uproar several years ago when an American guy was sentenced to flogging in Singapore for hooliganism? Nothing to do with Islam, IIRC he did some major public vandalism and this was the Singapore secular law for dealing with hooligans.

Public flogging for fraud? Absolutely! Why put them in jail at taxpayer expense and remove another income earner/taxpayer from society? Make 'em pay legal costs, refund the fraud, award damages and whip 'em 'til they're sorry.

Huh? respect between Islam and Christianity has never been "reciprocal". There is no equivalent for the Golden Rule in Islam.

I expect that Durbin will appear soon in the well of the Senate to protest this activity.

No? He's not?

You can make an argument for reasonable use of flogging or the stocks. These were ordinary punishments until around 200 years ago, when they were replaced by terms in prison. Before that, prisons had mostly been used as places for holding prisoners until their trials, not as places for punishment. Then the theory developed that prisons could be used for "correction," i.e. for improving the morals of offenders, instructing them, and making them better people. Nobody now believes that prisons serve that function for most prisoners. A few, like Chuck Coulson, may come out better people, but most come out worse.

Prisons are, however, extremely expensive to maintain. Each prisoner likely costs the taxpayers more than $50,000 a year. Stocks or flogging would be much cheaper, quicker, and probably just as instructive.

Personally, I'd rather be flogged than spend a year in jail, provided that the flogging was properly done.

So, I'm not saying that Sharia law is just, because I doubt it. But there could be an argument made for bringing back some of the old punishments, instead of fines and jail as the only alternatives.

I can think of a few Americans who need a public flogging.

Which ones?

Actually, I think we should bring back the stocks. Public flogging may be a bit too brutal for this day and age.

I can think of a few nuisance crimes that could be almost completely eliminated with a few hours in the public stocks for first offenders. These include: soliciting a prostitute, soliciting drugs, drunk driving, graffiti tagging.

I'd save the floggings for drug dealers, child molesters, and pimps.

My question is . . . how is flogging "un-Christian"?

Personally, I prefer flogging to incarceration, which is usually a school for vice. I don't have much use for Sharia law, though. Non-Mohammedans shouldn't be punished for violating Sharia law.

I'd save the floggings for drug dealers, child molesters, and pimps.

Child molesters, rapists (read WJBC), and pimps are the lowest, and deserve worse than flogging. Nothing less than the gallows is sufficient. That would make more of an impression. Even old Sparky isn't lit up in public view, and I agree with sedatives for cats and dogs...

As for drug dealers, Rush got his drugs from his maid! That is too subjective, and open for interpretation. Flogging would be enough...

Most of all, it should be carried out swiftly, without all this endless appeals BS... Anyone deserves a proper defense. Some just deserve a swift proper burial!
