An illegal immigrant from Mexico was sentenced Monday to 51 years in prison for wounding two Maricopa County sheriff's deputies in a shootout in December.
Prosecutors sought a 63-year sentence for Jorge Guerra-Vargas, who said in Maricopa County Superior Court that he fired on a seven member Special Weapons and Tactics team noy knowing they were cops.
"I thought they were thieves. I was scared," Vargas said through an interpeter.
Vargas pleaded guilty May 2 to three counts of aggravated assault.
A sheriff's SWAT unit was serving a search warrant Dec. 16 at a trailer home in a county in Mesa when Vargas opened fire with a 9 mm handgun after the unit busted in and threw open a curtain used as a room divider.
Sean Pearce, son of Rep. Russell Pearce, R-Mesa, was shot in the stomach and Lew Argetsinger was shot in the hand. Rod Jackson was shot in the chest, but his body armor stopped the bullet.

This is OK, at least as far as Washington is concerned -- illegals are job security for our police forces -- I wonder if shooting the police officers was one of those jobs "that Americans won't do.."??

He'll probably be out on parole in 14 months. Okay, okay, three years...
I hope it's the reverse, something like 217 years.

"I thought they were thieves. I was scared,"
MCSO officers may look like a lot of things, but 'thieves' isn't one of them.

A good third of our prisons in California are filled with illegals who did criminal violent acts.
This new addition to the illegal population in prison comes as NO SURPRISE.

Illegal or not when someone busts into your house you have the right to shoot back. Illegal immigration don't make illegal search and seizure right.

You're right. It doesn't seem to be a simple "he's illegal and shot a cop he's bad" scenario.
That said, I hate illegal behavior, even if it's done by "those who do jobs fully-human people don't want to do."

If they are coming to serve a warrant they have the right to bust in? I'm sorry I know that is being done now quite frequently but I do not agree with it. I believe it endangers enforcement officers, innocent civilians and undermines the law enforcement professions credibility with the very people they are sworn to protect and serve. I think we are going to remain in disagreement over this one.

It appears that the warrant was executed properly. My apologies I made my judgment based on the information I had which was obviously incomplete. The more complete story only raises one question why is the perp still breathing?
