Since I have to get to bed, I'm just going to paste what I placed into the coffinnails.com forum. There's relevant questions inclused that I'll place on this thread if they get answered.
Day one -finally got my seeds!
Them things are SMALL! Sheesh! I had to fuzzy up the end of a Q-Tip to place them into the trays. Before I screw things up, there's a few questions I must ask. The 200 seeds I got are Dark Virginia. I'm doing 16 at a time.
Will the unused seeds keep for a while? I'd like to grow 'em in staggered stages. Will regular tap water work, or will I have to use distilled or rainwater? I have to used that kind for my Venus's Flytraps. Flourescent lighting. Will it work well for staggered stage growing year-round? Humidity? Someone told me that nicotine is a natural insect repellant. Is this true? Has anyone here saved the $$$ they expected to save? That's why I'm doing this. What's the best soil to use?
Luckily, there's a big place near my home called Paulino's Gardens, where I can find almost all the accessories I need for this venture of mine. I'll update on this thread as I go along.
OH! First entry: Got seeds three days ago and placed them on top of potting soil in 16-cube icetray container with holes in the bottom. Placed trays in my carnivorous plant terrarium that uses three 15-watt flourescent bulbs on a 18-hour timer. Sprayed and soaked with rainwater. Crossing my fingers.
Last question for the day: How long should it be before something actually grows?
SheLion, here's the first.
Ping!
How will rolling my own cigaretttes cause me to smoke less?
This looks like a great idea.
The nicotine in real tobacco content isn't thinned out with added ingredients. One cig keeps me good for hours. I went from almost 2 packs a day to about 7-10 cigs a day.
How ya been, Phantom? How's the family?
Can't stand the high taxes?
Afraid to order off of the Internet?
Then start rolling your own!!!
I roll out a beautiful carton for a little under $8 dollars. Premiums in my state are now up to $45-$50 a carton. Can you imagine the money I have saved over the past 4 years since I now roll my own? It's mind boggling.

"Growing & Processing Tobacco at Home, A Guide for Gardeners" Book
By Jim Johnson
210 Pages, Paperback,
OOOHHH! That sounds like a great read! Thanks!
Loose tobacco is just that: loose tobacco.
Big Tobacco adds a lot of extra "stuff" that really isn't necessary. But I notice too that I don't have the need to keep smoking after I am finished with one.
There is nothing in my tobacco that leaves me craving for more. So, it's a win-win situation.
I'm about to start drilling for oil in my back yard.
It's already been established by the SCOTUS -- citing the interstate commerce clause -- that we cannot just go off and grow our own [insert your favorite crop here] if they decide they don't want us to.
Congratulations! Your yield, should you continue the growth process, will be about 1 cigarette per leaf. When you get some growth, transplant them outside to your garden area. Give them the recommended fertilizer. Don't forget to cut the flowers off unless you are growing for seed. When they turn yellow, they are ready to harvest. Cut the stalk with either a very sharp and heavy bladed machete or a tobacco knife, turn it upside down and stick it into the ground to let the drying process begin for a day. Next day, come along, strip the leaves and tie them to a pole, hang the pole in your drying shed for six months or so to cure. Process and smoke.
I predict after you go through your first crop, you will be back to the convenience store buying your smokes.
I really have to get to bed. Gotta get up for the graveyard in six hours.
BBL!
Keep us updated, I thought tobacco (tomaco for Homer Simpson) was reasonable easy to grow. Now grow some good Connecticut cigar wrappers and roll some good puros!!!
Seriously, I support medical marijuana, it's the medical meth I draw the line at.
Oh, never mind, thats a different plant. (For the time being)
What? Are you saying it's illegal to grow tobacco?
In a related note, there is a bill in congress that would allow you to distill your own spirits for personal use. I hope it passes, I have an old shine recipe I want to try.
I'm proud of you for growing it.
Picking and curing it will be a bugger (the stuff ITCHES!)So wear long sleeves and work fast.
Good luck! ;)
(Yeah, the worst summer job I ever had was working in a tobacco barn).
I used to smoke store-bought cigarettes until I switched to roll-your-own a few months back.
When I kept a pack on my desk, I smoked more than I did when I left the pack in another room. Just the minor inconvenience of having to go to another room to get each one cut down my smoking by quite a bit.
Now that I'm rolling my own (one at a time) and keeping the machine in another room, I've realized that I'm smoking even less than that.
Better tobacco + lower price + smoking less
