Home-schooled girl fights for band spot
Lincoln Journal Star ^ | June 18, 2005 | Kendra Waltke

Posted on 06/18/2005 8:15:49 AM PDT by Graybeard58

Before the parade passes her by, Tiffany Hasley will stand up for her right to perform with the Beatrice High School marching band. She'll be on the corner of 13th and Court streets in Beatrice at 8:30 a.m. this morning, all lined up for today's Homestead Days Parade.

Clarinet in hand, standing tall in her stiff new band shoes, she plans to leave quietly when school officials tell her she cannot march. Because the home-schooled eighth-grader does not want to make a scene, just a point. That is: Home-school students should be allowed to participate in any public school activity, as long as they pay taxes and live within the school district.

"I'm not in tears," she said. "But I'm kind of mad. My band teacher says I'm a good student. And I am first-chair clarinet."

Beatrice High School officials told Tiffany last month that she would not be able to participate in band next year as a ninth-grader. The school bars home-school students from being in activities regulated by the Nebraska School Activities Association.

Tiffany's parents, Ron and Vicki Hasley, plan to fight the school's decision, maybe even in court. But, at least for this summer, they figured she could still play with the band.

That's not the case, they learned Wednesday when band director Bruce Greenwell told Tiffany just before practice that Superintendent Dale Kruse decided she should sit out Saturday's parade. On Friday, the Hasleys received a formal letter from Kruse stating the same.

"They say she isn't registered, but no one has to be registered until school starts this fall," said Ron Hasley. "Really, quote me that policy. Show me that statute."

Both Kruse and BHS activities director Randy Coleman were unavailable for comment Friday.

But Roger Harris, attorney for the Beatrice school board, said the decision is consistent with school policy. No one can play in the band unless they are registered, full-time students at the school, he said.

"Even though marching in the parade is an informal thing, it's not open to just anyone," Harris said.

"Say a student from Wymore wanted to march. Would anyone care? Probably not. But the perception is, ‘This is the Beatrice High School band,' and we have to protect that."

Whether homeschool students can be in marching band is at the discretion of each school, said Jim Tenopir, director of the NSAA.

Band members can practice or perform at non-NSAA events such as parades or high school football games. But for competitive activities, the NSAA only allows students from accredited schools to compete against other students.

NSAA eligibility rules ensure that high school students keep up their grades and attend school regularly, or they cannot compete, Tenopir said.

Enforcing the very specific and rigid rules among homeschoolers would be impossible, he said.

"You are probably not going to hear a parent say, ‘I caught my kid smoking so please don't let him play football,'" Tenopir said.

But some state senators would like to change both school policies and NSAA rules to include homeschool students.

Legislative bills addressing that issue have been introduced for the past few years, most recently by Sens. Phil Erdman and Mike Foley. But none of the bills have made it out of committee.

Ron Hasley said he's "a constitution kind of guy," who will pursue the issue, not only for his daughter but for other homeschool students.

"I pay taxes," he said. "I'm asking for a service, and I'm not getting it. I hope what happens here sets precedence for the state."

I am not sure what to say about your son BIAR- My son has a different experience. I don't know what else I can say about that.

One thing is my child interact with other children about 6 or 7 hours a day- almost everyday. So I disagree that ALL homeschoolers are home only with Mom or Dad.

I'm not sure what you're talking about when you say that "you're not sure what to say about my son."

First, I have three kids and they socialize with other kids all of the time. We are the house in the neighborhood where all the kids hang out in the summer and after school. Sometimes, there are up to 14 kids here at a time...seriously. I wrote in other posts about team sports, church activities, fencing lessons, homeschool group activities and etc. My kids do a lot of stuff.

However, they are mostly with just me and/or their father during school hours except for when we have co-op classes going on or things of that nature. That's fine with us.

If your kids are "interacting" with so many other children for seven hours a "day", when are you teaching them math, science, history, writing, and etc? Do you have other people teaching them?

Oh no, It was because I mentioned I go to the Pool and play tennis at a Country Club...

well I did that to illustrate it was NOT the pool in my back yard. Had I any idea that the words Country Club would have set someone upon such a rage I would have used two different words. Oh there was the Summer home comment.

I'm not sure if you were directing any of that comment to me, but I can assure you I don't care about your "summer home". We have our own beach house on Fire Island to worry about. I've been to the Country Club a number of times and I know famous people...nah-nah-nah-nah-nah. lol.

Who cares?

Demkicker said she wasn't talking about all home schooled kids when she said said they don't get to see a lot of other kids. As far as her "feeling sorry" for them comment...I also feel 'sorry' for some kids who don't get the opportunity to hang out with other kids as much as yours or mine do. So, why not let them do some things at the public school - like band?

The parents who are secure- homeschool or public school, or private school- do not attack other parents for their choices.

I think you should read the comment you wrote in the italics above and apply it to yourself. Also, I don't appreciate the snide comment you said about my kid. I'm sure I could come of with a few snide remarks to say to you if I were that type of person - but, I'm not going to stoop to that (your) level. I don't know what your problem is, but leave me out of it.

Why should she march in the Beatrice High School band? She doesn't even attend.

I think younger (elementary school) kids are happy about hanging out with Mom. My two youngest children can't stand the thought of spending all day with other kids their age who are acting up or don't want to learn anything. OTOH, my middle schooler is getting tired of hanging around with me and his 'baby' brothers. He LOVES homeschooling but misses not being in the 'know' about what's going on at the school even though he has tons of neighborhood friends, classes, homeschool group activities, and sports teams to keep him busy.

So I say: I am sorry I don't know what to say. ( I don't think you really are concerned what I have to say)- but demkicker has accused me of "ignoring" your post #324 so I went back read it and said I don't know what to say. My child has a different experience- (as in so I have no advice). That is not snide

So Where she posts: "I noticed that you also conveniently ignored Born in a Rage's posts #323 to me and Gabz and her post #324 to you, which agreed with my remark that set you off in the first place.(DEMKICKER)

And note that she did not ping me to that post where she says: "Glad you're not trying to speak for Gabz because as you well know from the pings, she has already apologized to me for wrongly claiming that I was "attacking homeschoolers I'll call your attention to her posts #333 & #335.

Looks like you're the odd man out since both of them know that I made valid points.(Font color=red>I thought you may like to see what was being said about you here- I could be wrong You made the mistake of taking my remark about feeling sorry for homeschoolers personally when it never was intended to be personal. When you made it personal, I'll admit it made me angry and I was rude to you in return.

So I thought you would like to know that another poster was attributing "keeping me odd man out" in part to something you said. Not to bring you into a fight. She has already done that. As I said it is up to you if you want to let that stand. Also to show you that someone is accusing me of ignoring one of your posts, which you did not post to me:

To: Gabz; demkicker
"I noticed that you also conveniently ignored Born in a Rage's posts #323"(Demkicker)

I wasn't pinged to that- was I supposed to make a comment?

Whatever I do on this thread is damned if I do and Damned if I don't. I am supposed to comment upon posts that I am not pinged to and not supposed to Butt in when I see something I want to comment upon. I am supposed to accept that it is OK to misrepresent homeschoolers, but if I speak up ,I will be called names and have people say I should shut up about that as well and just take it. Oh, Ok.

So perhaps I thought somewhere there was discussion on me not commenting upon other people's posts. There is no snide comment about your son. Why the heck would I do that? This whole thing has been blown out of proportion because I responded to a defamatory comment by demkicker, that all homeschoolers only see Mom and Dad.

WOMEN! (Throws hands up and rolls eyes...)

Shouldn't we get another long lost freeper for good measure?

SO cy- what do you think about the homeschooler attending band? I am beginning to think that Mike in Iraq has a good point when he says the parents may be trying to push a point. I really thought about it and he may be onto something there that I had not considered before.

This case smells a little funny to me. The school band represents the school. I plan on homeschooling my children and I'm doing so because I don't want them in public school. Why would I want them in the band? Just mho.

Uh... Because the education sucks?

What do I win?

It could be that the child wants an opportunity that is not available other than in the school, or that she has some friends in the band and wants to join in.

It could be that the parents are pushing for it.

Most of the time, if I can not find what I want out there, I just start it- and there are homeschool bands.
