Dean Condemns 'Anti-Semitic Literature' (passed out at Conyers Downing St. forum yesterday)

WASHINGTON - A handful of people at Democratic National Headquarters distributed material critical of Israel during a public forum questioning the Bush administration's Iraq policy, drawing an angry response and charges of anti-Semitism from party chairman Howard Dean on Friday.

"We disavow the anti-Semitic literature, and the Democratic National Committee stands in absolute disagreement with and condemns the allegations," Dean said in a statement posted on the DNC Web site.

Rep. John Conyers (news, bio, voting record) of Michigan, the senior Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee, organized the forum on Thursday at the Capitol to publicize and discuss the so-called Downing Street memo. That document suggests that the Bush administration believed that war with Iraq was inevitable and that the administration was determined to use intelligence about weapons of mass destruction to justify the ouster of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein.

The Sunday Times of London has reported that the prewar document, which recounts a meeting of Prime Minister Tony Blair's national security team, was leaked from inside the British government. The White House has rejected the memo's assertions.

Conyers' event occurred in a small Capitol meeting room, and an overflow crowd watched witnesses on television in a conference room at DNC headquarters. According to Dean, some material distributed within the DNC conference room implied that Israel was involved in the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

One witness, former intelligence analyst Ray McGovern, told Conyers and other House Democrats that the war was part of an effort to allow the United States and Israel to "dominate that part of the world," a statement Dean also condemned.

"As for any inferences that the United States went to war so Israel could 'dominate' the Middle East or that Israel was in any way behind the horrific September 11th attacks on America, let me say unequivocally that such statements are nothing but vile, anti-Semitic rhetoric," Dean said.

"The inferences are destructive and counterproductive, and have taken away from the true purpose of the Judiciary Committee members' meeting," he said. "The entire Democratic Party remains committed to fighting against such bigotry."

The meeting room in the Capitol was supposed to have been very small. There was a closed-circuit hook-up to DNC headquarters where a much, much larger crowd was watching. A few people in the crowd started passing out some literature that is said to have been anti-Semitic or at least anti-Israel.

As far as I can tell, the literature or a summary of its contents has not been published or put up on the net. The actual identity of those passing out the literature has not been cleared up, either.

It is possible that the incident was caused by some real fringe group that most Dems would not agree with. I know there's been some strange stuff floating around conservative gatherings from time to time that I wouldn't want to be associated with.

I hope that the Dems get to the bottom of this because I hate to see this kind of thing anywhere. If they don't there will be consequences.

Can you believe this??

I believe within the Black community it is common for them to use the N word to each other with no backlash. However, they go wild when a white person uses that word, except for Mr KKK Sen. Byrd of West Virginia, and he gets a free pass because he is a liberal Democrat who pretends to be a Christian, but votes for abortion, gay marriage - stealing from the taxpayers - the whole nine yards.

Lots of hypocrisy in this country.

As far as I can tell, the literature or a summary of its contents has not been published or put up on the net. The actual identity of those passing out the literature has not been cleared up, either.

Chances are it was one of the Palestinian groups, passing out stuff along the lines of "9/11 was a Bush/Sharon plot" and "4000 Jews who worked at the WTC got calls from the Mossad on 9/10" - the standard propaganda spoon-fed to the Middle East by al Jazeera and the Muslim "clerics." If you recall the primaries, every now and then at Howard Dean rallies the cameramen would goof up and show crowd shots, and you could see that the Palestinian and other Arab flags way outnumbered the American ones in the audience.

The Dims are inextricably connected to the radical Muslim groups any more, and every now and then they slip up and let this show. It just demonstrates even more of their stupidity that Conyers put on this little sham hearing, hoping for wide dissemination in the MSM, and they've got the nutbags working the crowd with the "Death to Israel!" crap. Even now they still haven't figured out how to deal with the New Media. I shudder to think how much of this has happened in the past, to be "conveniently" ignored by the MSM.

As far as seeing the literature on the net or in print, I wouldn't count on it. Dana Milbank genuinely despises the Bush Administration and the GOP, so he's only going to report the bare minimum of this that he can get away with. He won't want to hurt the Dims too badly by publicly airing the dirty laundry - just letting us know the laundry is there will be enough in his view. And if some member of a conservative or pro-Israel group had gotten hold of some of the literature in question, it would have already been published, especially if it were really damning.

Interesting...from that link (DU insanity), after the initial attempts to blame it on FReepers, a few comments later someone is already defending the comments and explaining why "anti Israel" (I paraphrase) criticism is, well, "a good thing!". Ha, didn't take DU but five or seven or so comments to confirm the awful truth.

From your link (DU insanity), what I was describing: DU getting down to the fact that, hey, anti-Semitism is a worthy pursuit!

Good for Dean. I'm glad to see he's making a public statement against the anti-semetic elements of the radical Left. But if he really wants to make a mission of it, he needs to battle those radicals anti-semites that are proliferating in university campuses throughout America.

You've got it right. The Dems ARE becoming a cult. They put forth bizarre conspiracy theories and BASE POLICIES ON THEM! Their anti-semitism is slowly coming to the forefront. For the life of me I cannot understand how 70% (it is said) of Jews vote for this cult every two years!

Here is an open invitation for Jews to come home to the party of capitalism and Israel: The Republicans.

Dean Held Hostage, Day 3 (June 20, 2005)

What is their congressman going on about, Times readers must be wondering? Like Howard Dean, NYC congressman Jerry Nadler has denounced the anti-Israel, anti-Semitic comments made at a recent Democratic event hosted by John Conyers.

NY Sun readers are being kept abreast of developments; however, although NY Times readers were apprised of Conyer's event, the Times has sheltered them from news of the anti-semitic comments, as well as any news of either Dean's or Nadler's denunciation.

In fact, Howard Dean seems to have disappeared from Timesworld since he was spanked by Capitol Hill Dems in the June 10 edition.

Can it be that anti-Semitic pamphlets being distributed inside DNC headquarters during a DNC event is not of interest to Times readers? Even though it prompts a disavowal from the DNC chairman?

Can it be that anti-Isarel remarks at an event staged by House Democrats is of interest to a NYC congressman, but not readers of the Times?

Can it be that Byron Calame, Public Editor of the Times, will want to respond to this?

Let's find out together: his e-mail is public@nytimes.com.
