A current commercial campaign for Geico insurance depicts modern-day cavemen who get offended when people assume they're uneducated.
A similar theme could hold true when it comes to illegal aliens, according to a new study.
Contrary to the stereotype of undocumented migrants as single males with very little education who perform manual labor in agriculture or construction, the Pew Hispanic Center report shows that most of the illegal population lives in families, a quarter has at least some college education and that illegal workers can be found in many sectors of the U.S. economy.
"Not all of the unauthorized population fits the stereotype of a poorly educated manual laborer," demographer Jeffrey Passel, the report's author, said.
One of the key findings of the report is that the most recent illegals have a higher education level than those who have been in America for at least a decade.
"The share who lack a high school degree is lower among those who have been in the United States for 10 years or less than among those of longer tenure 45 percent vs. 56 percent and the share with some college education is higher 19 percent vs. 10 percent," according to the report.
But overall, "unauthorized migrants," as Pew calls them, are less educated than other sectors of the American population with 49 percent having not completed high school, compared with 9 percent of the native-born and 25 percent of legal immigrants.
Some of the report's other findings include:
Since the mid-1990s, the number of illegal aliens arriving in the United States has exceeded the number of new legal immigrants. In recent years some 700,000 unauthorized migrants have arrived annually, compared with about 610,000 legal immigrants.
Labor-force participation rates are higher among male unauthorized migrants 92 percent than in other sectors of the population (e.g. 83 percent of the native-born). In contrast, female illegals are less likely to work, with a labor-force participation rate of 56 percent compared with 73 percent of the native-born.
Unauthorized workers make up a large share of the workforce in a number of occupations that require neither government licensing nor education credentials. For example, about a quarter of all drywall and ceiling tile installers in the U.S. are illegal migrants, as are about a quarter of all meat and poultry workers and a quarter of all dishwashers.
Incomes for illegals are low compared to legal immigrants and the native-born, but they increase somewhat the longer an individual is in the country. The average family income in 2003 for unauthorized migrants in the country for less than ten years was $25,700, while those who had been in the country for a decade or more earned $29,900. In contrast, average family incomes were considerably higher for both legal immigrants ($47,800) and the native-born ($47,700). A Pew report issued in March said the undocumented population in the U.S. has reached nearly 11 million, including more than 6 million Mexicans.
It stated about 80 to 85 percent of the migration from Mexico in recent years has been undocumented, and Arizona and North Carolina are now among the states with the largest numbers of undocumented migrants.
If an orginaztion has the ability to get intimate enough with these illegals to learn they have HS & collage degrees... HOW COME WE CANT SEAL THE **** BORDER! REPORT AND DEPORT!
Perhaps the Pew Hispanic Center should be accompanied by federal immigration agents while they gather such useful statistics.
One of my best laborers is a Mexican who went to med school in Mexico. He didn't finish, but he is pretty sharp upstairs. He is also here legally. We pay him about $16 per hour, which is at least $4-$5/hr more than the other laborers. BTW, I haven't seen many educated illegals.
Most of who cross to come here have the same formal education as my 4 pound, 5 year old dog. (MEANING NADA)
Char
They're just coming to do the higher paying jobs that Americans used to do.
So illegals now answer questionnaires?
I don't thiiiink so!
I do not care how smart they are. They are illegals and should NOT be here.
ping
LOL, look at the figure they peg the illegal immigrants flow at. It's 600k per year. 600k is about 20% of the actual figure. Of this 600k they state somewhere around 25% have some college courses.
Okay, that's 150k with 'some' college courses. What is 150k divided by 3,000,000. The answer is your percentage of illegals with some college courses.
FYI, it's 5 percent. Very impressive. It's 10 percent that have a high school diploma. There you have it, 85% come to the U.S. without even a high school education. Notice they didn't mention how many have a fifth grade or less education. That's probably around 50%.
It is remarkable that the entire US Govt has no idea how many illegal aliens are in the USA.
But the peeYew group not only has the body count down pat, but they have all the school transcripts for every foreign-born fugitive in the country. Next, PEW will be telling us what kind of toothpaste and toilet paper they prefer...
At best this is a huge pile of AKAKA.
Funded by US Tax Dollar GRANTS ???????
I notice this article doesn't say anything about where the illegals with the college education are coming from. In another thread, it was mentioned that they are not from Mexico, but Asia and the Middle East.
And sorry for being redundant and posting this again, but most children of illegals do not do well in our schools
Here's some stats from a high school south of Bakersfield in a rural area. (from http://www.khsd.k12.ca.us/arvin/reportcard/2001/new%20sarc%20word_04.htm) 94% of the students are Hispanic, 89% get free or reduced lunches, and 20% are on welfare. The average education level of the parents ends at the 10th grade, the median income is $23K, and most are in agricultural occupations. Ok, that's the background that leads me to believe that this school is probably full of either illegals or the children of illegals.
Here's how they did on the state tests. This is the percent of students that scored at a proficient or higher level on each test in 2004:
Language arts - 12%
Math - 4%
Science - 8%
History/SS - 11%
And the ESL students scored a 1%, 3%, 2%, and 1% respectively on the above tests.
This is more representative of the results of billions of tax dollars at work educating illegals!
I see no reason to believe a word of it.
So instead of having an average 7th grade education from the Mexican school system they know have an average 8th grade education from the Mexican school system.
If they were smart, they'd fight their existing government for freedoms rather than running away and being illegals.
I didn't see anything in the article that specifically says that those who are better educated are Mexicans. The article sort of skips all over the place so I guess I would have to see the actual report from the PU Hispanic Center to sort it out. The report does say that "Not all of the unauthorized population fits the stereotype of a poorly educated manual laborer,"
The only mention of Mexicans is this:
A Pew report issued in March said the undocumented population in the U.S. has reached nearly 11 million, including more than 6 million Mexicans.
It stated about 80 to 85 percent of the migration from Mexico in recent years has been undocumented, and Arizona and North Carolina are now among the states with the largest numbers of undocumented migrants.
Me either. (See post 17.)
If they were so damn smart then they would stay in Mexico and figure out how to make their own country better by getting rid of shiftless politicans who do nothing to create jobs for the working class people of Mexico.
Immigrants in general, but especially the unauthorized are considerably more likely than natives to have very low levels of education. For example, less than 2% of natives have less than a 9th grade education, but 15% of legal immigrants and 32% of unauthorized migrants have this little education. (Note that education in Mexico is currently compulsory only through the 8th grade, so finding this many with this little education is not surprising. Further, the level of compulsory school attendance was recently raised from 6th grade.) At the upper end, legal immigrants are slightly more likely to have a college degree than natives (32% versus 30%). This difference is particularly noteworthy given the high percentage of legal immigrants with very little education. Even the unauthorized population has some at the upper end of the educational spectrum, with 15% having at least a college degree and another 10% having some college. Not all of the unauthorized population fits the stereotype of a poorly educated manual laborer.
You'll notice from the report it doesn't say illegal hispanics are educated. In fact, it points out that Mexicans genrally have a lower education. Those with college are more likely from the middle east, Asia and some from South America.
