Dear ******

We have important news to share with you to keep 50 caliber sniper rifles out of the hands of terrorists.

Congressman James P. Moran (D-VA), author of the 50 Caliber Sniper Rifle Reduction Act, will be offering an amendment this afternoon during House consideration of the Science, State, Justice and Commerce (SSJC) Appropriations bill (HR 2862) that would prohibit the exportation of the 50 Caliber Sniper Rifle.

Congressman Moran wrote the following letter to his House colleagues today about this important homeland security public policy measure:

"Capable of inflicting a devastatingly accurate impact from well over a mile away, the U.S. Army handbook on urban combat states that 50 caliber sniper rifles are intended for use as anti-materiel weapons, designed to attack bulk fuel tanks and other high-value targets from a distance, using "their ability to shoot through all but the heaviest shielding material.

"These weapons are a serious threat for use against civil aviation, hazardous cargo transport vehicles and rail cars carrying hazardous materials such as chlorine gas.

"The 50 Caliber is a favorite weapon of war lords, drug cartels and terrorists due to its unparalleled potential for damage. It has even been reported that al Qaeda, the Irish Republican Army and the Kosovo Liberation Army have purchased a number of these guns in the U.S. in recent years and shipped them overseas."

We'll continue to keep you informed about public policy options relating to reducing the risks of .50 caliber terror.

Wait, I thought that their favorite was the dreaded
"Assault Rifle", a weapon of such horror that it could
spew deadly "FMJ" ammo out like a hose, and that warlords
and drug kingpins didn't even have to aim it.

doing more research - that appears to be the Browning .30-cal M2 LMG in the "flexible" configuration (common to aircraft and some armored-vehicle installations)

>Who can hold a 35 pound weapon on an airplane and judge the distance, calculate the drop of the bullet, calculate how far in front of the plane and guess at how far the wind will blow the bullet off target

Modern telescopes
come with mounts servo controlled.
A handy craftsman

could modify one
or use it as a model
for a rifle mount.

With proper software,
such a modified gun base
could do some tough stuff.

This telescope is
140 lbs.
The mount is designed

to hold forty more.
Take off the scope and it might
be perfect for guns . . .

You fire a 50cal rifle mounted on this tripod and it will tair it right off, guaranteed. Don't care how much more weight you put on it.

.50 BMG, you mean. Pistols have been used.

But...according to John Lott...Has anyone in the US ever been murdered by a 50 caliber rifle? Apparently, No:

The one possible case of someone being murdered with a 50 caliber gun supposedly occurred about a decade ago. The initial story that I had seen was immediately after the crime occurred. Well, I was recently given this follow up article from jury testimony that indicates even in that one case the murder was not from the 50 caliber gun.

Even the gun-grabbers can't come up with a case...

.50's are accurate far more than 1000yds.

.223's, .30-06, and .308's are all deadly at 1000yds if they are accuratized, and many (.30-06 garands etc.) are deadly at 1000yds stock by a professional......

I started shooting black powder, and have both a flintlock and a percussion .50 smokepoles and well as a couple of replica Navy .44 cap and ball, and a Kentuckian .45 muzzleloading flint single shot pistol. What a lot of fun!

I have a .50 cal flintlock with a four foot long barrel, like the kind my ancestors used in the Revolutionary War. It is more fun to shoot than any modern weapon and my cap 'n ball revolvers are a blast (pun intened) to fire.

If Congressman MorOn is unhappy with the destructive potential of the .50 cal. BMG, he will stroke out over the 15.2 MM Styer round.

At 1000 meters this projectile will penetrate a 40 mm of RHA (rolled homogenous steel armour) and will result in serious secondary fragmentation effect behind the armour. That said, it will penetrate two walls of any modern APC at one kilometer range. The trajectory is very flat and does not rise higher than 800 mm above the line of sight when fired to 1000 meters.

Now that's a long range rifle, Congressman MorOn.

According to the history channel, only one person has been murdered with a legally registered machine gun and that was murder by a police officer!

As a Class III weapon owner, I can tell you that we are the most law abiding citizens in America. We even have fewer traffic tickets. (Don't ask me for source, I lost it in the '80s.)

That's why sniping over more than 500 yards is more theoretical than practical, a lot can happen over the half to three-quarters of a second the bullet travels that distance. If target takes a half step to the right or left during that time - you've got a miss no matter what kind of gun you were using - and now you've got a pissed-off target.

I do too.....only that's a .30 cal. air cooled, not a Ma Deuce. Look at the t&e mechanism, as well as the size of the rounds. Cool pic, though :-)

The most terrifying assault weapon in US history is probably the .58 caliber Springfield rifled musket. That gun killed tens of thousands of Americans.

http://www.civilwarhome.com/casualties.htm - upwards of 600,000 or more total deaths in the Civil War, of course many from the .58. Those who would disarm us would do well to remember the price. Without changing the second amendment, it is they who are in subtle revolt against the union's constitution.

The .50 caliber rifle is not a favorite weapon of terrorists, drug cartels, etc. It is a heavy weapon with a very limited ability. There are much better weapons out there to accomplish what these idiots fear that are lighter and have greater range than a .50 caliber rifle.

I wish people would start challenging their "experts" on their credentials... Start showing them to be the fakes and the liars they are.
