Police Fatally Shoot Bear After Animals Enter N.J. Home

VERNON, N.J. -- A township police officer fatally shot a 100-pound black bear after he and another officer responded to a woman's call that two bruins had broken into her kitchen.

Margo Spilotras had just finished taking a shower when she heard crashing and crunching sounds coming from the back of her home around 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Clad only in a towel, Spilotras ran to the kitchen and found two bears -- a 400-pound mother bear and one of her cubs -- had slid open a screen door and were inside the home.

The mother bear fled out the door after Spilotras saw her, but the cub -- which had been going through a trash can -- merely backed away before Spilotras threw a sneaker at its nose. The cub then fled to the deck as well.

"I threw a shoe at the bear. How stupid am I? I'm extremely lucky it didn't charge me," Spilotras told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Wednesday's editions.

As the cub munched on some Oreo cookies and a box of Cheerios, Spilotras alerted authorities and struggled to close a sliding glass door in the kitchen as the mother bear began pounding on a kitchen window.

When Vernon Patrolmen Scott Alsberge and David Hering arrived, they found the bears and another cub in the yard. One cub then ran up a tree while the mother jumped a 4-foot chain link fence to escape, but the second cub was shot by Hering after it started lumbering toward him in an aggressive manner.

The other cub escaped unharmed and fled with its mother.

State wildlife officials recently warned all state residents to be on the alert for wandering black bears, the strongest advisory issued since the bruin population started to rebound in the state.

Wildlife officials received 487 bear complaints between Jan. 1 and May 9, more than twice the number received during the same period last year.

Yea, but they will still die from lead poisoning just the same. They just look uglier.

A 100-lb cub and the guy shoots it? I mean, a 100-lb bear cub is not going to attack a human.

Mom had already shown it that its ok to break into the home of a human and raid their cookies........cubs learn fast from their parents......

Typical eco-engineering gone awry.....

Donut eater (tee hee) racially profiling God's creatures ping. LOL a buddy of mine tried to finish off an rampaging adult bear with a mini 14 about 4 years ago. We'll never let him forget it.

At least this is way up in lake country. They've been seen in Hudson County.

Your wrong you should ask the gal from AK that was partly eaten my a 110lb bear.

You think a 100lb bear isn't dangerous would you let a 100lb pit bull attack you. A bear has a lot more weapons then a dog, claws and teeth.

Any bear that goes into a house should be killed no matter what size.

I've seen what a 90-pound Rottweiller(sp?) can do to a person. A bear has claws to go along with its teeth.

Riverrunner, I've directed your post to the proper author.

100 pound bear can shred a human.

I think a cop who'd shoot a bear cub out of fear is too chicken shit to be a cop

Where does it say the officer was in fear? btw, I'd of put the bear cub down too for fear of getting sued for allowing the bear to run loose in and around the caller's house and I don't keep snacks handy to play with fuzzy woodland creatures.

Here they are in "Malsua Country" as in about 50 feet from my house. :)

This mama bear pictured could indeed be the one in the article . Hard to say since we end up having a female running around with 2-3 cubs on a regular basis.

The word "cub" means baby, or juvenile. Any cop claiming to have shot one out of fear is too chicken shit to be on my police force; he belongs with the keystones.

All the cop had to do was scratch the guy's ears for him or find him some oreo cookies and he'd have had a friend for life instead of having innocent blood on his hands.

Hey...this is a no BS there I was story....there was a SP puppy pusher at Kincheloe AFB in the early 70's and we had a base lake patrol to keep the kids out of the rec area after hours. We heard the handler screaming over the radio, dog barking and a "bear" growling mad in the back ground. Then we heard the little S&W Combat Masterpiece 38 special barking..fast !

Two LE patrols left the base area and the Security Flight Chief came screaming down to the lake with his GAU5A/SMG aka the XM177A1.....(read short, very short M16 with 4 each 20 round mags filled with only 18 rounds of 5.56MM in each as the quality of the mags was poor so we downloaded em in such a manner.

Anyway long story short the K9 came back to base three days later, the handler took the easy way out and went swimming vs trying to take on the bear with the damn 38 revolver he was issued and the security flight chief emptied all 4 mags on full auto into the wounded bear that was really close to base housing when he arrived........not even enough left to make a decent rug.

It was a hoot for that Cold War Outpost on the border of Canookistan.....

You asked which was better looking, the 'gator or my ex? It really depends on how much beer/wine or Jack Black one may have consumed in trying to judge such a dilemma.
