Deep Throat Was Wrong; Nixon Was Not Guilty
Wanniski ^ | 6/8/2005

I came to believe beyond any reasonable doubt that Nixon did not lie or direct a cover-up, and that if he had gone to trial in the Senate, he would have survived. Why did he then resign? Because he knew a Senate trial would take a year of the nation’s energy at a time when our economy was falling apart underneath him and we were at a point in the Cold War in which the Soviet Union seemed to be winning.

Nixon was a great President in many ways, esp. with regards to foreign policy. Like Bush, however, he was too much of a domestic spendthrift in some ways.

Seems to me that Nixon famously refused to spend money allocated to the federal budget by the House and Senate. He said it wasn't necessary and refused to let the government spend it.

That was the first and last time that ever happened.

If any excess monies were spent it was probably due to the Viet Nam conflict which he was attempting to wrap up.

The thing that I get sick and tired of is hearing the left refer to the Vietnam war as "Nixon's war." Excuse me? DEMOCRATS put us in Vietnam and LBJ escalated our involvement, NOT NIXON. Another leftist fabrication. Just like all blacks BELIEVING that democrats got them the Civil Rights and Voting Rights acts. WRONG! It took LBJ going to the republicans because southern democrats (SENATOR AL GORE SENIOR INCLUDED) opposed it.

As I often tell my liberal friends...Democrats got us INTO Vietnam, Republicans got us out.

Did you read the article? Jude explains the tapes and why he thinks they have been misused by Nixon's opponents.

The problem is, we have been forcefed by a liberal media concerning Nixon's guilt for so long, it creates some problems in our heads to think it might all be wrong. I suggest a re-examination.

You have to be of a certain age to appreciate the hatred that the Left had/has for Nixon. I once was a member of that screwball club but have learned to appreciate the man.

I doubt he would have survived a trial. The Senate was totally controlled by the Democrats then (60+ seats?) They would have arm twisted enough votes to convict regardless of the evidence.

And if he had survived trial, he would have still been completely neutered. Resigning was the only real option left to him. The Pardon may have been unnecessary, however. A trial in court may have vindicated him in the public eye.

Yes, I read the article, and I have spent hours and hours of my life reading everyone's side of the story, and listening to the tapes and/or reading the transcripts. Despite what Jude says, I beleieve that there was a lot of unethical behvaior going on in the White House, and that it is the unethical behavior that is what brought Nixon down. No unethical behavior = no Nixon being brought doen.

Texas AND Illinois would have made a difference.

As I recall, Pennsylvania and Illinois were the two where the vote was not only close, but also highly suspicious in Chicago and Philadelphia.

And with a cese-fire which kept the North and South separate, like in Korea. Maybe the fall of Saigon, eventually, was inevitable. But I don't know that the US fulfilled its obligations even under the cease-fire agreement.

As far as Watergate, I have to say that of course Nixon did wrong. Was there a double standard? Of course. Look at JFK, LBJ, and Clinton too. But he did "mess up" and paid, dealry, for it. So did we, as a nation. Remember the Carter years?

Nixon's big crime was trying to protect criminals.

Nixon gave the left (aka liberals)(aka democrats) (aka socialist) (aka communists) the club they needed to beat him to death with by trying to cover up a penny anty break in at the Watergate Hotel.

It was the Fellow Travelers real first success at taking down a anti-communist conservative

That is quite true as he proved after JFK stole Illinois yet Nixon didn't take it to court.

Plenty of dirty tricks here in Texas as well, according to "my sources". LBJ was on the ticket and he's was no stranger to vote fraud.

He didn't do as well as FDR if you wish to place blame. FDR kissed up to Hitler and knew about the Nazi concentration camps and over six millions Jews died. We can do this all day if you wish to do this but the numbers show Democrats have allowed many more people to die no matter how you look at it.

Nixon has never needed vindication with me. I've always thought he was a great president. Watergate is miniscule, and a common practice of all politicians in Washington.

What a load. Look:

A BIG load

1. Nixon was no conservative, so we have no need to stretch the truth to try to exonerate him.

Nixon gave the country the infamous Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), wage and price controls that hurt the economy rather than tax cuts that would have helped and the famous phrase; "Were all Keynesians now". Nixon should be dug up and reburied head down with his feet exposed above grade to be gnawed on by rodents.
