EAST PALATKA, Fla. -- Federal agents raided a migrant farm labor camp where homeless men and women were kept in what labor officials called a version of modern-day slavery.
Four people, including the camp's owner, Ronald Evans, face federal charges in a case that officials said is likely to grow. Investigators are looking into alleged environmental violations and drugs found at the camp in Friday's raid.
"The word is out that we are concerned about human trafficking, and we will leave no stone or camp unturned," said Steve Cole, a spokesman for Jacksonville U.S. attorney Paul I. Perez.
Officials said homeless people were recruited to the Evans Labor Camp through offers of room and board, along with alcohol, tobacco and drugs, which they bought on credit. But they never made enough in the field to pay it off, according to an investigative summary.

Along with alcohol, tobacco and drugs? This labor camp must have been libertarian run...
Bump! Lets have a lot more of these types of raids!!!
Elian wasn't "illegal." He was a refugee in the US under the "wet foot, dry foot" policy. I was living in Miami at the time and what Butch Reno and Clinton did was disgusting. My precinct went 71% in favor of Bush largely as a result of that horrendous act.
I'll bet you're glad to be out of Florida, huh?
I thought he was legal but wasn't sure. That why I put the question mark. This really stirs up memories. I haven't thought about Janet Reno since last Halloween.
They're simply importing slavery, and we all know it. "You can fool some of the people..."
Were these illegal aliens, I've yet to get any info regarding the possibility but it's not unusual for the news media to hide that little detail.
Protect our borders and coastlines from all foreign invaders!
Be Ever Vigilant!
Minutemen Patriots ~ Bump!
This statement is deceptive in that normal illegal aliens who aren't being made slaves will be ignored, as our government has no doubt commanded to every city in America.
Prostitute slaves are commonly sold just like a car or a loaf of bread. Flesh is cheap. The gubmint knows all about it.
No doubt they were illegal aliens, it's just kind of curious how the news media so often omits that fact.
Agreed.
