Fresno Mayor Alan Autry waded into a volatile federal issue Thursday in his annual State of the City speech, calling for a two-year moratorium on immigration in order to address the "chaos now masquerading as a border."
Autry acknowledged that he would likely get criticism for his comments, much as Gov. Schwarzenegger came under fire after praising Minuteman Project volunteers who patrolled the Mexican border.

Following "911" many Americans, including this conservative, called for a multi-year moratorium on all immigration into the states. No one listened.
I wonder if this is a political epiphany by GovRino and Mayor "Bubba", and can either man match his rhetoric on this issue with a serious and substantive effort.
They won't be able to back up anything without federal support - which is not there.
The momentum is building against illegals but if you think they are expensive now wait until we legalize them, they will all go on the dole for the maximum 5 years allowed by welfare and quit working. The best thing that can happen is amnesty gets held up in the House ans Senate and we start deporting them when we find them.
Man, I love 'Phantom Empire!'

I thought Arnie recently called for a separate California border patrol. Over and above the USBP. More BS I guess.
Bottomline. PresBush should be ashamed for the weak effort by his administration in securing the US borders from illegals, terrorists and other assorted criminals. Pathetic!
"calling for a two-year moratorium on immigration"
A two year moratorium?
So the aliens all they have to do is wait it out for two years and then they can come flooding in like a torrent.
How asinine!
Moratoriums are useless in that it does not stop aliens from setting foot and families on our soil.
It is only around 20 million people we are talking about here, after all.
If 100% of all three of our government bodies woke up tomorrow and in one unanimous voice and vote declared the illegal aliens would be deported - WHAT WOULD HAPPEN?
Answer: Notta - nuttin' - forget it. It's too huge. There is no way for Mexico to be able to absorb that many people and no way for us to get them out of here - even if every breathing legitimate citizen and elected official in this nation was in total, harmonious agreement over it.
>>There is no way for Mexico to be able to absorb that many people and no way for us to get them out of here<<
Strong disagreement coming from me! These Mexicans would be going back to Mexico in much better shape than when they left. Their personal assets would be 1000 x's greater. They now know what is required to performa days work in America and make a success of themselves. The number of Mexican businessmen in America is not a small number. Take those skills back home and apply them!
He's a good man indeed. He's been an excellent mayor for us.
========================
You forget - THEY ARE AT HOME - RIGHT HERE!
heheh . . the BP can't even keep the present numbers from coming across, let alone send 20 MILLION back.
Plus, wouldn't it take multiple decades to screen and identify that many deportees?
NO! I don't buy into your defeatist attitude either. In conjunction with securing the borders, enforcing existing laws that punish employers who hire illegals and halting all welfare payouts to illegals, a multi-year moratorium would be ideal. If need be, the feds should seriously consider placing US military units on the borders to assist the USBP in enforcing the law. After taking these steps and stopping the flow of illegals into the US, then and only then can any guest worker program be considered and expected to operate properly. Otherwise all that is being accomplished is to perpetuate and exacerbate a serious national security problem. A problem that will continue to undermine our constitutional republic.
I wish I did.
>>Plus, wouldn't it take multiple decades to screen and identify that many deportees?<<
Not if a private company had the contract.
Otherwise, the problem of illegal immigration will never be resolved. It will never go away. Changes to US immigration policy that occured from 1965 to 1990 has changed this great nation forever. It's a proven fact. More liberalization of US policy is directly responsible for the destruction of our nation, as it continues to undermine the very fabric of our constitutional republic. Ignoring these facts will only hasten the end. I for one, don't ever want to see that happen.
The beauty of it is that it robs the media of convenient "martyr" material, the illegal-legal eagles of clients and saves us (the United States) billions of dollars because the aliens remove themselves at their own expense.
The critical necessity to get that ball rolling is more politicians willing to cough up their best contributors. We can pressure them to do so with our votes and, more importantly, our individually small contributions that constitute the majority of campaign funding by law.
So don't hesitate to throw a RINO on the barby this Memorial Day weekend! Just watch out for all that splattering pork fat.
Coals are warming up . .
Oh! And besides, I liked the way Autry stood right up to the goofy Governator from the get-go!!! (grin)(yeah, I know, he apologized an all that...)
